Re: MAGIC - What an underrated masterpiece!!!

Hey CelticLegacy, I'm with you! I thought this thread's title referred to the JLT Rainbow song "Magic," and I was cracking up! There IS some nice guitar in that song, mind you.
I don't know Gillan's "Magic," but I LOVE "Glory Road"!

OK I'll bite on this one. Which songs/riffs/solos/licks from HOBL were flat out (by this I would also assume you mean directly) copied from Gillans Catalogue?
Let me think about this for a bit.
Hard Lovin Woman (riff=Space Truckin sideways)
Unwritten Law (Stranded with Chasing Shadows drumming)
Spanish Archer (don't know of any copying there)
Strange Ways (another play on Stranded)
Mad Dog (just basic Spotlight Kid style riffing)

None of the above my friend.
Strange Ways intro=if you don't hear "Scarubus" you're deaf

Mitzie Dupree=well not blatent but structured very much like "Puget Sound"

There is more, but I'm pressed for time right now. emoticon

I also had the same vision when I entered here and was singing the tasty little guitar solo in Rainbows "Magic". But Gillans Magic is also quite good. Bluesy Blue Sea being one of his best solo tunes. Of course it elps that he got a rockin guitar playter in the band for that one.

RAINBOW's Magic is the best ABBA song that ABBA never wrote. Once you stop thinking in hrd rock terms you can really find this tune VERY enjoyable!

Yeah, but then you listen back to previous Rainbow songs and think "Oh dear!"

There shouldn't be an 'ABBA' type song on a Rainbow album in the first place. IMHO emoticon

No knocking Bernie meant there. I liked Glory Road and he was good live. I just enjoyed Gers a little more, probably due more to his obvious Blackmore influences.

Why not? There was even a Rainbow type song on an ABBA album! (Eagle anyone?) emoticon
