MAGIC - What an underrated masterpiece!!!

Just finished banging my head to Gillan's Magic (excelent remaster on Caramba, by the way!) What can I say...I can't understand how on Earth this album is forgotten, while it kicks the !@#$ out of most post--reunion Purple releases! Ian's at his best vocally, great instrumental power and some awesome classics like Driving me Wild and Demon Driver. Not to mention the fantastic Spotight Kid rip off opener What's the matter and a true work of genius - Living a Lie, one of Ian's best ever ballads. And I'm not even talking about the ultra cool bonus tracks like Fiji here! This record posseses so much energy (sadly acking from post-reunion Purple) and yet people spend time trying hard to admire disasters like Abandon etc. I understand that in the glorious heavy metal year of 1982 Magic was kinda lost among all the classics of the genre, but I really feel it must be re-discovered by both Purple and Maiden fans! emoticon

Never been my favourite Gillan album, but you've forgot about the album's true classic, Bluesy Blue Sea! One of the finest metal songs to come out of the earlier 80s. This is Magic!

But as for the rest, some of it I can take, some of it I can leave. I much prefer Double Trouble, which remains one of my fave Gillan albums ever!

An album I loved at the time, but in retrospect not my favourite - I'd take any of the Tormé albums over this one emoticon.

I find Double Trouble better (I'll Rip - MOWar - Sunbeam - Hadely - Born To Kill )

Fiji is a gem !

Magic is a classic along with Mr. Universe, Glory Road, Future Shock and Double Trouble. IMHO Ian Gillan's peak as a solo artist and 100 times better than anything going on now!

Unfortunately my Gillan albums are on vinyl: unfortunate since I no longer possess a record player (turntable to those under the age of 25).

But Magic was my favourie of the ones that I heard.

As for the spin off bands, I like all three of them: theywere all fabulous. Whitesnake was my favourite, but all three of them kicked ass in their own way

Nice to hear there are other Gillan fans. I always thought that Gillan's solo career was the most ambitious, diverse and overall consistent of the DP spin-offs. I really prefer "Gillan" to "IGB", but all the albums from Clear Air Turbulence to Magic are fantastic. I was disappointed when he split the band up and joined Sabbath, as the Magic album showed the band progressing far past most other groups musically at the time. Nothing he's done since Magic has had the same effect on me. What a great band and what a crappy way to go out, amidst rumours, lies and infighting.

In the States, all the "Gillan" albums are overlooked! It's been years since I saw one in a record store. The USA doesn't know what it missed, as Gillan should have been a big band here.
