Re: Born Again.

This album is a "Scream"!! Ian is so damn good that he upstages the rest of the band on this, his only Sabbath album! Pass the Tequila.

Just a couple quick comments based on others comments here. Gillan said he had made up his mind to leave Sabbath before they really even had gotten started and that he only joined because they all went out drinking and he got so blitzed he agreed to join. Even if Purple had not reformed in 84 he would have left.

To this day, I have not heard a comparable story to how Gillan joined Black Sabbath.

Disturbing the Priest is not as dark as you may think. The story goes that the practice space that sabbath had during the writing sessions that led to the album was next door to a church and the song was about how they were disturbing the priest with their loud playing. The parishners could not hear the mass. So the priests would come over and complain about how loud they were.

If you think about it, nothing Black Sabbath did was really all that sinister. It's not like they live in Alester Crowley's house, or summon Baal.

What I had heard was that they went out drinking and go carting which led to his joining Sabbath and the writing of Trashed. If you never heard that before just listen to trashed and imagine Gillan driving while highly intoxicated. It gave a completely different light to the lyrics for me after I read an interview with Ian from a 1983 rock mag. I especially love the lyric of how he went off exploring ( rather than lost control )

Re: Born Again.

Actually the story of DTP has to do with
them lighting off fireworks on the grounds at nightime outside of the Manor studios next to the church.
This is in fact what really inspired the song,SG1976 probably just doesn't remember that detail of the story, after all it was about 21 years ago.
Ian Gillan signed a deal with them that was designed to last 13 months and thats it,he cut things short after 11 months,by leaving the band when they were in Canada, they made two different trips there on the tour.
What happened was, some members of the opening band Helix were having fun with some of the fans by waving and throwing drumsticks out of the hotel window where both bands were staying,Tony and Geezer took major offense to this emoticon
they got so pissed about it that they had a couple of their personel security guys go out and clear out the crowd because they didn't appreciate the attention that was being given to Helix(native Canadians)
this was the last straw for Gillan, their antics were getting so out of hand that Tony and Geezer were arrested several times on that tour, for drunken in public situations,After the show that night,Gillan packed his bags and got the morning flight out, leaving Sabbath high and dry, with some gigs left to play.
He had the best time of his life on that tour but it all got out of hand toward the end he said.
Not the coolest thing to do,but it sure beats what Blackmore did to Purple in 1994.

[1] Ian didn't leave the band in Canada, [2] he didn't leave them on a moment's notice, "leaving Sabbath high and dry", and [3] they didn't make the scheduled second trip to Canada, in January 1984 - it was cancelled due to illness.

Ritchie phoned Ian up during January to say, 'Do you want to get Deep Purple back together?' Ian told Sabbath that he would not be continuing with them once the tour finished, in effect, giving them about five weeks' notice.
Helix were the support for two New York shows, Utica [29th Feb] and Albany [1st March], before this line-up of Sabbath with Gillan played their final gig on 4th March at Springfield Civic Center.

As for what Blackmore did to them, Wasn't it 93. I thought that was considered a favor by most Gillan fans. Had Blackmore not left Gillan said he would have at the end of the tour. If he had beaten Blackmore to it maybe Blackmore would have stayed on and the band would have signed on Steve Perry or something like that.
