How famous was Steve?

Was Steve Morse famous in the States before he entered dP?
I'd never heard of him , here in Europe.

The name Dixie Dregs rang a bell outside the context of Purple for me, as well. Don´t know why, though...

Don't know about his mainstream recognition but he was Guitar Player magazine's poster boy.

He entered the buisnees through Capricorn records in 1974,he went on to make records
without letting up till he made his first
solo album around 1990 or so,then he put together TSMB.Up to that point he had a large body of work but was considered a musicians musician. His popularity increased somewhat when he joined Kansas for two albums, but still nothing mainstream as far as being popular goes.
A huge cult following is all he really ever got,but that took him as far as being nominated for 8 Grammy awards so he prooved to be popular to industry types,so it depends on what level you consider as being
"popular status"? emoticon

Dreggs were not known by the public. Though I did listen to a vinyl once, never to buy anything. I've seen a webcast with the Dreggs (used to be available through liveconcerts.com). Too boring. The same soloes as he uses today.

Gillans micstand hit the nail on the head, famous in the guitar community, but not much outside. Morse was the first artists of his era I remember having a signature instrument, built on his specifications. The Ernie Ball Steve Morse guitar.

I had all the Dixi Dregs Steve Morse band & Kansas cd's before there was even a hint that Blackmore was leaving the band in '93, when I heard he was the new guitarist in Purple I thought he was an odd choice and had my reservations but as soon as I heard Purpendicular I was more than convinced he was the man for the job. I even had the pleasure of telling John Lord how much I liked Steve in the band and he agreed and said that he likes the way he takes a little of the past and also brings in a new sound and merges them together to create a new Purple sound, I treasure that moment.

I was the same way fast eddie, had most of the Dregs and SMB material. I kind of liked the Kansas Power album, I even saw them live. I was rather surprised when I heard the news of him joining Purple.
