If you're into 60s rock n' roll covers and would like a slice of (very) old Gillan magic go for it. Don't expect anything amazing though, the album was intended as a glimpse at the start of Ian's career and that's the purpose it strives to serve.

It's a mildly enjoyable album, IMO. The choice of songs is OK, but the versions are not very exiting. Standard and predictable.

The playing is good, though. They should have been able to achieve something better.

Wasn't Gillan's motivation for it just as a sort of a "fun thing" at the time? By that I mean, re-unite with some old buddies, play a bit of the stuff they did all those years ago, have a few pints while maybe making a few bob? emoticon

Just thought I'd add I that I think BigIan addressed the motives in the "Q + A" section of his "Caramba!" site, which is where I might've gotten my speculative answer from. Though to quote the words of Dennis Miller's favorite disclaimer:" I could be wrong." emoticon

If I remember correctly, the idea was to recod the album they never got a change to record in the 60s.

So, yes, they probably did achieve that. I assume that the versions are as they performed them in the 60s, and the album is very much like a 60s recoding (not technically, but contentwise).

Still, since they actually bothered to di it, they could have done something exciting about it. After all, Gillan must've have evolved something during the 30 years it took to record it.

It's a fun album to have, though.

It's not bad,Gillan certainly suits the old
songs very well.
I think it may be out of print by now but you can check the DPAS site online store.

He used to talk about how they were scheduled to do another one,
but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

The idea came up after Gillan was handed a business card after a show in Oslo with Purple. It was Gordon Faifminer the guitarist with the Javelins (the guy is an architect). Some of the guys in the band hadn't picked up their instruments in 25 years. When they put it together Gillan was scared that the boys were going to sound over rehearsed, (there was about a two month delay from when they decided to do it and when they actually recorded it). Once they got together everything was cool.
I like the album but then again there is not to much Gillan has done that I don't like.
