For Gillan Fans Only

First item of mail received after the postal strike was Gillan's Japanese Album on CD emoticon. How I looked forward to hearing this album for the first time in about 10 years, but wait a minute...what the hell happened to Second Sight?!! Is my memory shot or didn't the album used to open with Second Sight, not Street Theatre? emoticon

Anyone out there (e.g. FatLarry) know the reason for the change?

The Japanese Album should open with Street Theatre
Mr. Universe should open with Second Sight

Both are followed by Secret Of The Dance

...aha! My memory is OK emoticon.

The vinyl track listing was as follows:

Side 1
Second Sight
Secret Of The Dance
I'm Your Man
Dead Of The Night
Fighting Man

Side 2
Message In a Bottle
Not Weird Enough
Bringing Joanna Back
Abbey Of Thelema
Back In The Game

So, the question remains: why change Second Sight to Street Theatre? FatLarry?

The Japanese album was at first released in japan only. And Mr. Universe everywhere a year later. When the Japanese album came out in cd(and got the name "japanese album") Second Sight was already out and Street Theatre wasn´t.

Is Mr Universe still available anywhere on CD?? I've got the original lp (too scratchy now to be listenable emoticon) and it would be great to get a replacement. But I'm a bit confused - are some of the tracks on The Japanese Album (which I've never had the chance to hear) taken from 'For Gillan Fans Only'? (eg Abbey Of Thelema), and what happened to Vengeance and Puget Sound etc from the original Mr Universe lp?? emoticon

I´m still not sure wheater the Mr. Universe LP has re-recordings or stuff from the sessions of the first Gillan line-up on it(but I belive to hear a slight difference in the guitar on Roller and Fighting Man).

The japanese Album came out in 1978 only in japan. A CD re-issue came out in the USA in the late nineties(I have that one). There are only a few tracks on it which later didn´t appear on the Mr. Univese record, which are: Street Theatre, I Am Your Man, Not Weird Enough, Bringing Joanna, Back, Abbey Of Thelema and back in the game. The CD Reissue has bonus tracks on it which are taken from the Japanese version of Mr. Universe(I belive the tracks were remixed).

Most of the tracks were reused for the Mr. Universe album which released worldwide(all Gillan Albums were reissued with bonustracks but are deleted meanwhile.).

Abbey Of Thelema was re-recorded in 1980(it´s a different version to my ears and the ending is different).

Gillan didn't have a record deal in the UK when "the Japanese Album" was released in Japan in 1978, 'though he played much of the material on a UK tour in late '78/early '79. Like many others (I dare say), I bought the Japanese import in '79 after seeing the band in February of that year. Mr Universe was released later that year, which included some of the songs from the Japanese album but re-recorded with the new line up (Tormé and Underwood), except for Fighting Man which was the original version.

Today was the first time I'd heard the Japanese album since I sold my vinyl collection 7 years ago, but the songs all sound the way I remember them - at least the ones that were on the original album! It's great to have some extras too, but I miss Second Sight before Secret of the Dance emoticon.

Try eBay for Mr Universe on CD - that's where I got my Japanese album emoticon.

I got mine from http://www.cow.co.uk/ which is a site someone (can´t remember who) recommended me on the old forum. Back then they had the entire Gillan Catalogue in store, but they ran out of it so soon, I was only able to pick up the japanese album(american gold disc version, is that something special?). Then I got the rest from a very kind forum member (thanks again, you know who you are) who burned me all the stuff for a handful of boots.
Haven´t checked if "c.o.w." have the stuff again.

Thanks Milan emoticon

I've also got the 'For Gillan Fans Only' album, but amidst all the changes that took place back then it seems strange that the Japanese album was so different to Mr Universe. I know the guitar part for Fighting Man was recorded with Steve Byrd and Liam Genocky on Mr Universe, and things got weird with record companies etc.... but I'd just like to be able to buy a replacement CD of an album I really like - it just screams "This is 1979!" - it's a shame it seems to have disappeared.... emoticon

Re: For Gillan Fans Only

Okay I hope this help's,
when I first got Mr.Universe I had also gotten an album called GILLAN.
it was made in Australia,
this is the same album as what many years later became known as the Japanese album.

Second Sight(sublime) was not on it and it also contained some other track's that didn't make it on to Mr.Universe
Bringing Joanna Back
Not weird enough
I Am You're Man
Back In The Game
and complete different version's of the Mr.Universe song's.
Mr.Universe was recorded with Bernie Torme'
and the GILLAN album was recorded
with Steve Byrd
SB is the guy on Fighting Man from Mr.Universe
making him and Bernie actually both being on Mr.Universe.

The GILLAN album was also released in Japan and I now
have it on vinyl and it's real nice.

This is why they called it The Japanese Album
when it was releasd so many years later on cd,but
What I wonder is why the called it that instead of
calling it the Australian Album?

I love both albums but you can clearly hear the difference in stuff like Message In A Bottle
Roller and Secret Of the Dance,
they are played with different vocal's put in here and there, and Roller and Vengance are played at a completly
different pace.
Hope this clears up the hanfull of !@#$ on the question.
