Purple's reworking's of HELP and their take on Skip James within - PRELUDE: HAPPINESS/I'M SO GLAD were fantastic - and the latter certainly was better done than Cream's studio version of that song - much more atmosphere.

Both songs were more within Rod Evans' vocal range, making them work better than alot of MK I's other material did. It's strange how much he improved by the time of his tenure in Captain Beyond.

Totally agree, IMO their version of Help is miles better than the original. They actually make the words and music go together...

So did John Lennon. Purple's pace on the song was more what he wanted - commercial pressures made the Beatles do it at a faster "poppier" pace. Of course, Lord and Blackmore's virtuosity far outpaced anything the Beatles could do as players . . .

I´m pretty glad that someone likes The Shield as I like! Most of the people I show the tune show themselves indifferent! That´s my fave one, too.

Tough choices - for me! I'm gonna 'spin' this question thisaway:

Purple Composition: "Why Didn't Rosemary?"

Cover: "Help"

Instrumental: "Wring That Neck"

I like the song very much, also - the topic was "fave" so we are talking millimeters difference here.

The only two Mk I songs I can't listen to are the "We Can Work It Out" cover ("Exposition" is ok, tho') and "Lalena" - there were many other Donovan songs they could have covered that would have been better choices.

Hmmm, I really like both of those, particularly Lalena...
