Re: The Apparent Lack of Respect for MkI

First of all, when did this forum start? Long ago on the THS pages I was championing such a Mk1 board continuously and was laughed at. Now they make one, and I only find out a year later.

Here's my outlook on the matter: Deep Purple Mk1, similar to following marks, is enjoyable because of our love for Mk2. If Mk2 never existed then I probably wouldn't care about Mk1. If I thought Mk1 was as far as they could go, then I would be disappointed. But since we love Mk2, we enjoy the earlier stuff out of admiration for the band. Much like early Beatles or early Stones stuff. We wouldn't listen to it, or at least I wouldn't, unless we already loved the later stuff. My early Beatles enjoyment comes out of the fact that I like the personalities of the band. You tend to let a lot slide because they are your favorite band, so you enjoy the early stuff, or the Mk4 stuff simply because the name Deep Purple is attached to it. I'm not saying it is horrible stuff, as I particularly admire the Mk1 stuff, but I wouldn't give it the time of day otherwise.

Make sense, folks?

Oddly enough, people say I look like the Eric Foreman guy from that show. I'm not too ashamed, as his girlfriend on the show is smoking hot.

On the Raful Fez deal: I've never seen a piture of him, so I cannot comment. What I always imagined of Rahul was a real gaunt, very pasty faced, bookish sort of nerd. He's the kind that doesn't get out much, so he's highly inarticulate with his body (and his words) and he has pipe cleaner arms. It's amazing that the guy has a wor lass at all! Unless it's all a front. Clever guy that Rahul is. You don't lead the amount of Highway Star posts by 75% for nothing.

a) Around the start of March 2005, if memory serves.

b) Me too. Same thing since September of 2003 on this forum, too.

c) Me too. Same thing since September of 2003 on this forum, too - 'til March of 2005, that is.

d) What the hell - better late than never! Give yourself a little credit; it's only been 9 months, not a year. emoticon

e) Fair enough & reasonable, from one standpoint.
Speaking for myself, I was MkI fan from late spring/early summer of 1969. It's kinda funny, because I think it was probably a year or so after that before I even had an inkling that Deep Purple MkI no longer existed & the band had changed the singer & bassist, and thus their direction & sound - for all intents & purposes.
Speculating as to whether the band members would've carried on or gone on to the noteriety they eventually achieved is fun, though. Of ourse, had they just broken up & faded away individually, my non-humble opinion is that I'd still have 3 albums by a great band!

f) Yup!

Mk I did indeed make three solid albums that should stand on their own today.

The instrumentation, the great and no-obvious melodies, the funny rearrangements, the live feel and the will to experiment - you can almost hear their milk teeth dropping to the floor as they play.

They were so ambitious and so talented - and so totally lost for any direction, they just did whatever slipped into their minds.

Something about that was soon to be lost with Mk II I think. Or not totally lost, but with a selected direction on In Rock some of the experimentation was a bit limited, in exchange for other qualities of course, but each to his own.

I think the problems with MK1 are two fold.
First is some songs are really dreadful to hear. I mean MK2 has some "subpar" stuff but nothing really too bad. MK 1 had some great songs mixed with some real stinkers. The other thing is poor production. Some of MK1 makes In Rock sound like Dark Side of the Moon by comparison. When Rod wrote his own lyrics, he did some really good stuff. Covering Tina Turner or Donovan, not so good
