Re: Why Does Everyone Hate "I'm So Glad" So Much?

I like the song very much.

BTW,

About 99.99% of the world thinks that Hush was written by DP and it is a great cover version. As is Kentucky Woman, which still gets good airplay, at least here in the US.

Perhaps, but the thing about DP covers is that they've arranged it themselves. They rarely sounded like the originals, so really, it was their own ideas musically, even if the lyrics were somebody elses.

It's what Vanilla Fudge were doing too, and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Maybe they were still finding their feet as song-writers. Or maybe they really did want to be Vaniila Fudge to such an entent that they copied the Fudge's early principals.

I love I'm So Glad. First version of the song I ever heard, and while it is extremely poppy, it still has a great vibe to it.

River Deep Mountain High is a bit of a stinker though. Probably the only song by Deep Purple, until Mitzi Dupree, that I would deem unnecessary.

Yup, though Eric Burdon shows how it could be done. His version is great.

The song is really by the great bluesman Skip James. As far as cover versions go I'll take Cream because Jack Bruce is doing the vocals. I wonder if any member of Deep Purple did what Eric Clapton did and see to to it that Skip got his royalties. emoticon

The only reason Hey Joe is credited to Purple is because the rights were sold before they recorded it,I may be wrong but I believe thats the way they handled publishing in those days.
So they very well could have bought the rights, then sold them,or something. emoticon

I remember reading a review about DP’s version of Hey Joe. This one critic said something about Rod Evans was too white and didn’t sound very threatening. You couldn’t believe that he was capable of shooting anyone. Hummm. That statement always stuck with me. What does a killer sound like? It sounded like Rod was just too clean, to be convincing, if you know what I mean. Sounds like some form of reverse racism. I’m sure film maker David Lynch could use the DP version in his soundtrack and make it work.

From what I’ve heard, the EMI Early Years, I’m in agreement with Mr Ed45, I believe they did some amazing stuff considering the studio time restraints. In fact, I’m so impressed with the EMI Early Years, I just ordered all three of the Mk I albums in one box set called “3 for 1”. Though I haven’t heard DP”s version of We Can Work It Out, I know the Beatle version is a gem. I just love the harmonium work from Lennon.

a)Mr.Ed is right, and usually very articulated in his expression of such things...almost journalistic if you will.
Nick Simper has made a very good point about this himself in interviews.

b)On the other hand,Nick has expressed his regret for ever(what he once called) "messing around with this number".
Myself,I love this version, and it only helps that they added such a brilliant intro.(exposition)
