Why Does Everyone Hate "I'm So Glad" So Much?
I like the original Cream version, and I like the Deep Purple version better because of the harmonies, the organ, and because the song works its way back to the classical prelude intro that Jon Lord started it with, so it's very logically laid out.
That Lord intro by the way is sweet, because the chord progressions go in places you wouldn't expect them to....
Em - D - C - F# (i - VII - VI - II)....
and I love music that surprises me in its direction and movement.
But all that put aside, I can't figure out why most people on the forum can't stand that song. It's got good flow, it feels very appropriate for its time, and is every bit as good as the Cream version IMHO.
Those who don't like it: Is it that you just don't like the song...even Clapton's version...or you specifically don't like the Purple version?
I agree it's not their best song, not even for Mark 1, but it's a hell of a lot better than "One More Rainy Day".

I like it. I like it even better than Cream's version.
Actually I like One More Rainy Day too.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate "I'm So Glad" So Much?
I don´t hate it, but I also don´t particulary like any of the cover versions they did on the first albums, they could write a lot better songs themselves.
I think people dislike it because it´s repetative but then they wouldn´t like the Cream version, either I think.
I like the Cream version in the live versions a lot better. The version on Cream Goodbye has three amazing solos on drums, bass and guitar all performed at the same time.
Yeah Cream, those were the days, as they say themselves...

Pretty much what I was gonna say, Milan...thanks for saving me the time!
Unlike Milan - and others, I'm sure - I love most of the early 'coverversions' on the first two Deep Purple albums, with "I'm So Glad" + "River Deep, Mountain High" falling short of the mark, though.
One point I gotta take up with ya, Milan - given the time constraints to get the first albums recorded, I'm not at all sure that Purple (at that time) could've written 'a lot better songs'. I'm sure that the majority of the band would've preferred to record their own compositions + see them on the final release, but the time constraints + DP's lack of 'say' in the business end of matters at the time likely had a lot to do with the decisions regarding track inclusion(s) and whether those tracks would even get a chance to be worked on in the studio - let alone recorded. I mean, sheesh - they did the first album in what? 18 hours?

Because of the limited "lyrics"? - I DO!

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate "I'm So Glad" So Much?
No, you got me wrong there Ed.
I meant that their own compositions they actually DID were a lot better than most cover versions.
I understand why they had to do that in the very fast done debut album, but I still like their own compositions better and that´s why the cover versions give the word "fillers" a whole new meaning to me in that context, given they had to put some covers on there as they hadn´t enough time to come up with enough own ideas to fill an entire album. Fortunatly the covers got less on the follwing albums(2 on TBOT and only 1 on DP).
From most of their own compositions of the first three albums + maybe Hush you could compile one great album, although I still think that DP is the best one, as it´s the most ambitious and creative effort of the first incarnation.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate "I'm So Glad" So Much?
Yeah, I agree with you, Milan, that quite a few of Purple's early self compositions were as good or better than the covers.
I still maintain that overall, the Purple done versions of "Hush"; "Help"; "Hey Joe"; "We Can Work It Out"; + "Kentucky Woman" are all FAR superior to their original - or most well known - versions...so I guess you can say my viewpoint is more than a bit biased.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate "I'm So Glad" So Much?
....which version of "Hey Joe" are you talking about,as being the original????
I'm sure it probably might be better than the original, but is it better than the Hendrix version, for overall insrumentaion and vocals?
------
about ISG,the live Cream sounds about the best to me,the studio version and Purples version some how aren't too un-alike,atleast not enough to ever distict from my ears,Blackmore just seems to do a Clapton there...which is probably why he thinks his version is "lame".

I don't hate it. But it's pretty boring allright.
One More Rainy Day, on the other hand, is a very good pop song!
They made too many covers back then. Too Vanilla Fudge, if you like.
