Re: Rod or Joe
"Im not just going to sing someone elses drivel,I can't do it any more".
The he goes on to do it every night on the tour, then gets fired and goes on to make two cover albums and appear on two Purple tribute albums.
I tell you this guy wins the award for talking out of the side of his neck,I should know cos I'm the runner up!

Re: Rod or Joe
Rod. Joe isn't a bad singer, but he seems to only be fit for 80's pop/metal type stuff, which is does just perfectly.

Re: Rod or Joe
JLT is the Worst singer Deep Purple ever had and he is the Worst singer Rainbow ever had. If that fails to answer the question that was originally presented on this thread then it is my hope you could forgive me.

Re: Rod or Joe
Liked Rod in the early Purple days as well as his Captain Beyond stuff. JLT was OK at some level.
No contest, Rod.

Re: Rod or Joe
JLT undoubtedly has a bigger range, but I much prefer Rod's style.
I love that whole psychedelic era anyway, and Rod's voice fits in perfectly within that genre.
And his dense, heavy, psychedelic meanderings with Captain Beyond are fabulous!
JLT ain't all bad, and the recent work I have heard has been excellent, but the 80s soft-rock style vocals is not my biggest guilty pleasure.

Re: Rod or Joe
Rod is a better ballad singer then JLT.
I Saw the JLT in "live between the eyes'. He was very average.

Re: Rod or Joe
Maybe we should start a "Rod Evans Appreciation Society" I wish he could be found. I'll bet he would give an interesting interview! Them MK I albums really were good!!

Are you talking about THE greatest Rainbow concert ever that totally blows away any of Dio's drivel? I guess folks here are seriously missing the mature fun of bashing so I don't really feel like interfering with you "good old ultraviolence" to quote Stanley Kubrick. Have fun!
Most of you allready know my opinion and that's JLT is the best thing that happened to Universe since the Big Bang or Gang bang or whatever it's called. Much better singer then Gillan, Coverdale or Dio these days. Rivaled only by Bonnet and Lande. Can't comment on Rod's current singing abilities of course
Now my point is: comparing them is stupid. Who's a better singer Elvis or Halford? Well, they both weared leather and I guess that as much as RE and JLT have in common. I always loved Rod and Anthem/Lalena/Blind/April are all my lifetime ballad favourites, criminally underrated by Gillan-loving purists. Great singer, particualry with ballads. Period.
