The Book of Taliesyn (rate it)
Tracklist on THE BOOK OF TALIESYN
1. Listen, learn, read on
2. Wring that neck
3. Kentucky woman
4. Medley: a) Exposition; b) We can work it out
5. Shield
6. Anthem
7. River deep, mountain high
The second album contains the magnificent "Shield" and greatest hard rock instrumental ever "Wring That Neck".
The drawback is they made WRONG choices of songs to cover. Who's idea is it to cover "River Deep, Mountain High", "Kentucky Woman" and "We Can Work It Out", it's bad choices of songs. Ritchie could have done better with other rock songs.

Re: The Book of Taliesyn (rate it)
In all honesty, I'll have to give it a "sit and listen through" before I cast my vote. It'll either be "good" or "very good", I'm certain. There was always just something a little "off" about the album, for me...maybe the production?
I don't think it was as Randy suggested, the choice of "coverversions" (Geeez, there I go again! If anyone sees Plant - or Coverdale, for that matter - coming, let me know! ), I think they were all pretty good. "River Deep Montain High" wasn't necessary, I agree, but Purple handled it fairly well.

I'd only give this a 'fair' rating. Far too many dodgy covers on it.
But that's balanced out by the original material

A good rating. Mk 1 never produced a classic.
If it wasn,t for the fact that it is Deep Purple, I wouldn,t have any of this style of music in my collection.

Re: The Book of Taliesyn (rate it)
CLASSIC--
Again, like Shades.... this album just blew my mind, because when I first heard it in 1983 there was nothing else out there like it.
I said to myself, "finally, a group that knows what REAL music is."
THE SHIELD, WRING THAT NECK, EXPOSITION, LISTEN LEARN READ ON, PLAYGROUND, and some of the other bonus tracks off the reissue.
These songs tell me that when musicians are just starting out, and don't have any preconceived reputation to protect, what kind of unbridled musical depth they can achieve. By the 80's they were just trying to please the rocker masses, but in 1968, the music was still real.

Re: The Book of Taliesyn (rate it)
After giving it a "sit 'n listen", I'm voting for 'very good'. I was gonna go with 'good', but then I considered the haste + pace with which it was written + recorded under the shadow of (by a band still in their first year), and perhaps it was that one factor which tipped the scale in favor of 'very good'.
I admit to being swayed by the fact I was listening to the remastered edition with the "extras" on it, too (but those are the ones I've listened to for each case in these polls, where there's that type of edition available).

It's a classic! The best mk1 album IMO. Very enjoyable.
