Re: Some Evidence of MkI's First Set List
Oh God! Anyone - including a fansite - that prints a Blackmore quote is potentially asking for it!
No problem about the "alchohol" comment, Larry - I thought you were only kidding, anyway. I just wanted to keep the record straight, was all.
Now, to get back to the topic - has anyone else ever seen any other type of "evidence" as to MkI's early set lists? I've always been interested in this, and wondered if they were doing stuff like what was mentioned as being some of the earliest rehearsal material, like the Vanilla Fudge arrangement of "You Keep Me Hangin' On", for example. As for the Beatles material reference, I always thought they may have been doing some of the more "ballad oriented" Beatles stuff, as Evans' greatest strength was as a ballad singer.
I realize there may not be much point in asking the band members, as most of them claim not to remember very clearly, which is understandable. And one, as we all know, doesn't have internet access from his Afghanistani cave any longer!

Re: Some Evidence of MkI's First Set List
Not so much a comment, as I'd like to learn more about Mk 1 just like Mr. Ed does, and there's very little info. about them out there, but I do have a question:
How do I go about getting a hold of Mk 1 live performances on video/DVD, or CD?
I think I'm most fascinated by Mk 1, because they're the darkest, the most mysterious, the oldest, with the least amount of organized info. on them.
I guess as a Deep Purple fan, I like to make life tough on myself. The music that's easily accessible through media bores me because it's ubiquitous and all around us for the taking. But to dig a little deeper, and find something that you CANNOT just pick up at Tower Records....now that's a challenge!!!
And that's exciting!!!

Re: Some Evidence of MkI's First Set List
The rarest thing I´ve got(at least I belive it´s rare) is a live shot of them performing Kentucky Woman as an Mpeg video. It´s from the video which´s soundtrack became the Inglewood Bootleg. The quality is crappy as hell, but it´s still nice to see a bit of them performing live in their original line-up.
I´d be interested in seeing the whole footage...

The best thing you will find out there at the moment would be,Pioneers Of Heavy Metal on dvd,it has a full length color version of them doing Hush live at the Plaboy mansion.

The empeg Kentucky Woman is probably good enough Milan
cause it doesn't improve one bit throughout.
It's practacally un veiwable for the most part.
I really can't help you with a copy cause mine is a vhs
tape that is NTSC and transfering to PAL is not only spendy
but not really worth the time, even if you have the technology.
I can however be of help with plenty of footage that you may be interested in obtaining.(on vcd)
You know what to do if feel up to it.

Re: Some Evidence of MkI's First Set List
In DPAS' Mp3 Jukebox there are currently 4 songs from Warhorse.
Nothing really new, but a remark has caught my attention:
quote: St.Louis
Warhorse's first single, released in early 1971. The track (originally by The Easybeats) was played live by Deep Purple until September 1969.
Didn't know about that!

Re: Some Evidence of MkI's First Set List
They haven't got the best of Warhorse there mind. Two half-decent demos and a single is not very representative of a great band.
Back in Time is a bona fide classic, but it's a lengthy track and you can't gage it from a minute and a half.
Mind you, now I'm being picky. Great to see some Warhorse clips on the site!
Didn't know that Purple played St. Louis either!? They certainly didn't play it at Inglewood.

More details will be in Nigel's book I think... ;-)

Re: Some Evidence of MkI's First Set List
From Darker Than Blue issue #45 July 1993 there was an article devoted to the numerous press clippings collected by Nick Simper and saved in his scrapbook. These varied items were translated from Danish of Roundabout's tour in Denmark April 1968.
Here are the songs titles mentioned in the DTB article: Mandrake Root, Hush, I'm So Glad, Help, Paint It Black (with drum solo), and Hey Joe as the final number. Most of these numbers are not meant to be considered as performed in the proper order in the setlist, just a random collection of songs except Hey Joe was highlighted as the last song.
One of the press clippings states Roundabout started with an original instrumental but did not give the title so it is possible to be And The Address or Mandrake Root even though the latter does have vocals but was probably extended in live performance to give the impression it was an instrumental. As already mentioned Mandrake Root was performed in the set but was not stated where in the setlist. Another article states the set was only 45 minutes long.
