Rod Evans can't sing hard rock?

I've heard Captain Beyond alot on the internet radio I listen to alot lately. They play quite heavy material and Evans sounds fantastic with them. I thought DP sacked Evans because he couldn't perform the heavy material.

Same seems to go for Nick Simper in Warhorse. Maybe that was their way of expressing "outside protest"!emoticon

I've never heard Captain Beyond, but I think that anyone who has heard "Bird Has Flown" from the third DP album would have to admit that Rod could sing hard rock very well.

I don't think it was a question of ability as much as desire. I think that Rod had more pop pretentions in mind for Purple, so he tended to turn everything in a Neil Diamond direction. Most likely he came around to the "hard rock" side of things after Purple started kicking all kinds of ass without him.

In either case, he was a great singer, and it's a damn shame that we'll probably never hear him again, even if it WAS his fault

Simper could probably have played HR and did indeed in Warhorse, but I don't think Evans is a HR singer, even if Captain Beyond and some of the early dP songs are quite heavy. He's got a good voice but it remains more pop-ish or fits more a prog band...IMHO

CB is perfect sample that RE can sing hard, but not hard as IG did in the 70's, so it was a right decision sacked RE from DP that time, but is not right say that he cant rock.

He may have been able to sing hard rock, but there is no way he would have been able to handle those vocals on In Rock. His voice was very much of its time and wouldn't have taken the band forward.

And I love his work with Captain Beyond.

Completely agree. Can you imagine him screaming "into the fire"?Captain beyond may have done some hard rock work(and a great one indeed)but it was never as heavy as early 70ies DP.

No. Rod is/was never ever a hard rock singer. He's a great crooner who prefers Elvis! emoticon

I agree w/Trollprincess and must add that his voice is great for a prog-band like CB.Definitly not for "In Rock".
Could you imagine CIT sung by RE?
Just do the test on listen to Mandrake root studio, then the In Concert live version...don't you hear the difference?
This one's for you Trollprincess.Told you I'd keep your support in mind! emoticon

Mark1 was much heavier live than in the studio,
and when they played live they were much louder
thus giving thing's an approach that would later define heavy rock.
If they had as much time to record those first three album's as they did the next three, then who know's how good it would have been?
