Re: Half a year later...

I doubt Deep Purple will ever make a 'classic' album again but, as far as a rock album goes, Rapture is as good as anything out there today. A vast improvement on Bananas. I dont have a problem with the production either.

Can't agree ROTD sounds pretty poor to me.

I've never heard an artist say, that they operate on this level at all.
They simply don't look back, and should be honored that.
The problem is, some won't let them grow, and think they should pump out another of the same, whichever they prefer it to be.
They can't embark on that consiously, it's not productively possible.
(that is where the subject looses all it's merit, cause it's not even a personal artistic goal, for just about any successfull musician)

Bob Dylan once said... "I couldn't write all of those songs again, the times directed them, I just expressed myself within the framework at the time, and got lucky I guess."

I don't think you can "make" a classic album. You make an album. Then time and fans make it classic.

Re: Half a year later...

I just started listening to it again after a two month pause. For me time has told:

ROTD is a classic album, and so is Purpendicular.

(Maybe my opinion is somewhat obvious based on my user name...).

ALmost one year later nothing has changed. I still don't like it and will give up my attempts to listen to it.

A single output with Rapture and Before Time Began would have been enough for me.

Still like the album very much, but they should have replaced Back to Back with Things I never said. That would have made it even better!
