MG/Rover - Did They Have It Coming?

Is manufacturing industry as important as it once was? There was a time when the demise of the UK volume car industry would have been unthinkable, but what have we now.....I ask you?

What happened to them? In the US, there still is a market for the Land Rovers.

Did any other car company buy it?

I lost track of who own who.

Mercedes owns Chrysler.
Ford own or has interest in Jaguar, Volvo, and Mazda.
GM owns or has interest in Saab, Opel, Isuzu.

And since I'm American, I don't know who Fiat all owns.

The UK car industry has been another classic example of how European manufacturing in general has always presumed the consumer will buy their products simply because 'they are there'; and with a shock wake up to the fact (often far too late) that Japanese products are cheaper, better designed, better quality and more versatile.
Thats why 'GB Ltd' is now a mainly service based industrial power & why one in four of the working population works for the government!!

Nope, my other passion (apart from music...) is following my local soccer club, kidderminster harriers( hence harryurz)- who are about to be relegated from Coca Cola league 2 in May!!

In answer to the original question; Yes.

If you make a product that is out of date, poorly produced, unreliable and generally not up to the competition, then you cannot stay in business very long.
I am surprised that they lasted this long, just long enough for the owners to sell off the land and assetts that were basically given to them by BMW.
Yes it is a shame that our British Manufactoring has gone this way but if we cannot compete with our eastern rivals then we must diversify into something that we can excel at.

Saw her first submarine
She was scared and watched through a peephole.

'Oh, come, come, come'
Said the Sardine's mum
'It's only a tin full of people'

Yeah, and because of this mixed situation, if you buy a Volvo, it has a Ford gearbox, Saab is made in Germany, and so on. It is all about brand names now.
