Rezi~I think the "ankle breaking" incident you refer to was actually from the 1972 series, I am pretty sure they discuss it on the DVD that the REAL TONY MANERO has. Not one of our proudest moments to be sure! It was the great Kharlamov who was injured. Perhaps you got it confused because it was Bobby Clarke who did it, and he was the Flyers captain at the time.

The Flyers vs Red Army game was a wild affair. The Red Army left the ice after Kharlamov took a hard body check, and no penalty was called.

All these great games are fairly fresh in my memory because, due to the current NHL strike, the sports channels here have been replaying them on a fairly regular basis.

Okay, thanks for the correction.

They are being replayed? Oh, I wish we would have them shown on telly as well - even if we of course didn't participate on the games. And I'm pissed of the Swedish league finals are only shown on cable pay-tv. The teams in the finals are great. But I can't be arsed to look for a bar to see the games in.

Over in our league, the hockey finals will start tomorrow. My team lost in the first play-off round, but still have a team to support in the finals as a home town hero is coaching one of the finalists.

The guy never thought about sports, he only thought that a 0:8 result against a capitalist country would be a horrible propaganda move. Then Brezhnev (who was a hockey maniac) insisted that "it's not a tragedy, let's see what happenes!" I guess deep inside as a fan he simply wanted to see the game and was curious to see the legendary canadian pros in action as well!

We had heard rumours that Brezhnev was a hockey fan, never knew if they were true or not, very cool. Considering this, it must have been hell for the Soviet players and coach's to return home after the Americans beat them at the 1980 winter olympics in New York. emoticon

Too bad the russian DVD doesn't have an english translation or subtitles, you guys would have a blast watching it!

I would love to see it. I am hoping they will eventualy add some of the footage to the Canadian DVD.

Rezi, are they still using the the center line for offside calls in your league? I had heard that some of the European premier leagues were no longer using the red line.

They are talking about trying this in the NHL to generate some more offense. What do you think? I think they should try it, why not?

The red line has been 'off' for a few seasons now (i.e. that you can pass through 2 lines). The idea was exactly what you mentioned. It didn't turn out that way, the game has gotten even more passive as the teams make sure they have at least three players under the play all the time, using only one (or if they're brave, two) skater to forecheck. The bulk of the coaches and players seem to want to go back to the traditional rule, but as it is in the 'international' rules now, it is hard to change. I don't think we will. But I have to say, to be fair, that when a great offensive defenseman makes a pass from his own end of the rink to a skater in full speed just as the latter is reaching the opponent's blue line, yes, it does look great! But it happens very rarely.

There has been talk all over the hockey world about making the goals bigger to see more scoring. I find this very artificial. Okay, the goalies' gear has been getting bigger and bigger but this isn't the right way to see more goals. I think the first thing, at least in Europe, is to get rid of the blocking and interfering players who are not carrying the puck. It so awful to see a skater trying to get to opponenet player with a puck, but there's an opponenet chasing the forechecker around the ice.

Btw, Frölunda (of Gothenburg) won the Swedish League last night. Congrats!

Interesting comments about the red line, I guess we have to be carefull about playing with the rules.

I agree 100% with you on changing the size of the goal, bad idea.

Hopefully you'll stay with the red line rule.

But you know, to be honest, in the first final yesterday the opening goal was scored just the way I described in my previous post emoticon : a break-away, from a fast, hard pass from deep in one end to the blue line of the opposing end. The reciever was in full speed and voilá. But it was only possible because of the mistake made by the other team while making a line change on the fly.
