How to improve the forum? Throw less dirt upon JLT? Hell why not.

For me one may throw dirt around all day long, just try dig some disussion out of it.
How about actually discussing JLT, anyone tried that? emoticon

When get back from my vacation n Turkey I'm planning to post an indepth analysis of JLT's post Purple solo career feat. reviews of all the albums. The next project will be Graham Bonnet's post Rainbow career. I think such thread can cause some real MUSICAL discussion here. I know Glenn Hughes is worthy of such a thread as well, but I guess I'm not the biggest Hughes' fan here so I leave this to the real enthusiast and completist. After all, I don't own more then 200 of his albums so I'm not the man for the job! emoticon

Here is a conversation I had with Mr. Ed about JLT on the Admin forum!

Published with permission from Talking Horse productions*! emoticon

Mr Ed said:

Okay, I guess it's time for a serious reply. Sorry, but I've been extremely busy lately as I'm now a small business owner along with the umpiring gig.
Anyway, the JLTBS thing was always intended as pure satire with no intention of causing any serious harm. It was never intended to sway opinions one way or another - even I can give credit to his fans for that. Nothing I could possibly write about him would sway them away from being fans of his - if it did, then their "fanship" would've had to have been tenuous at best.

Now, let's look at some facts - that thread was started at approximately the same time I was made a moderator and I waited for at least 3 weeks before continuing it as I was questioning myself as to whether it would be over the line or not. Nothing was said or even hinted at that it was. If it was brought up then, of course I would've stopped at that point. I'm somewhat miffed that more than 4 months after it's start and more than 2 months after the last parody lyrics were printed that such a reaction has been displayed by you (Milan) + Rahul - whose reaction I'll reply to also. A little enlightenment would be welcome as to what engendered this reaction. I don't feel that my satiric jibes at JLT have ever affected my reliability as a moderator - I would never delete or censor anyone expressing admiration for the guy.

All that said, I do see how a visitor to the forum might think there was a slight contradiction going on, with me being a moderator and all. I kinda always thought that the longer term members would understand that when I satirized JLT, that that was MrEd the Deep Purple/Rainbow fan posting, not MrEd the moderator.

Rahul -

Is the JLTBS thing a form of trolling? Well, er, yes of course it is. But trolling for laughs, not "flaming" other members or indulging in "flame wars" with other posters. There's "good trolling", which gets people talking, laughing interacting. There's "bad trolling" which is actually "flaming". I don't think that ever happened (flaming), as the vast majority took it in good humor - even some JLT fans, who earned my respect by showing such good humor (AT Armstrong springing right to mind). It seems it's only the ones who seem to take themselves and JLT a bit too seriously who were somehow offended. I agree that we're more than capable of having intelligent debate on this subject (JLT).

In closing, nothing I've ever said regarding JLT should be considered as a "personal attack" - I don't know him personally, thus that would not be possible. All I ever did was satirize him - it's not my fault he makes it so simple to do (that's another joke, by the way).
Well, now I guess we'll see if you two guys are interested in having an intelligent discussion about this - but I'l hardly be surprised if either of you decide to exercise dictatorial powers and ban me - but you'll always know in your hearts if you take that action, you contradict the very thing you advocated.

*edited for length (This horse doesn't half go on a bit!) emoticon

Congratulations mate. A family member of mine started up a small business, and I know its requires a lot of hard work. Good stuff!

I know this. You've been here for ages and you're one of the good guys. Its obvious that you were not being intentionally hurtful.

It wasn't anything to do with the fans being swayed. I just think the forums should be a welcoming place. Friendly banter is great. But if I was a new user and went on to a forum to see that someone was slagging off the very artist that it was created for, I'd just think 'Bugger this, just another forum full of idiots'. And believe me, there are plenty out there. The Purple forms have never been one of those, even iof we have been hit by trolls in the past.

Forty years ago, people could smoke anywhere in England. Now they are talking about banning it completely in public places.

I never said anything about your posts at the time because it does not offend me personally. I never particularly found it funny (different sense of humour I guess) but it certainly did not annoy me.

However, over time (and after a few people raised concerns), I've begun to realise that we shouldn't be seen to be slagging off a performer like this. There is a point where we should just stop it.

Comments like Is it true that when people tell JLT to go and !@#$ himself, he has no problem accomodating the request/demand? on a thread asking people to suggest questions to JLT is uncalled for I feel.

And another thread that gives all the squeeler jokes wore thin a bit, and resorted to people swearing at each other to test the censorship rules here (though this was not your fault), so I closed it.

I don't think people particularly want to read all that stuff. Sure, we know its a joke. We know who you are. But outside users logging on may just not get the joke, and take it as offensive.

Another example is: Feel free to bash the little he-she at your leisure

Surely we are above comments like that. If the general discussions board contained comments like that, I'd get pretty fed up. The JLT one should be no different in its standards, regardless of the fact that not as many people use it.

True. And I wouldn't censor anyone expressing a dislike towards an artist. Unless I deemed it offensive, or could cause offense.

True again. But we've been here for years. Not everyone has been.

Hello

While I would never compare your JLT bashing with that of previouys forum trolls, I still think that people have the right to come on to these forums and discuss JLT without having anyone start poking fun. Again, if it happened on the General Discussions board, I think we'd all get a bit annoyed by it. People who laugh at your JLT jokes now, would soon get fed up. A standard needs to be maintained across all boards, I feel.

quote:

There's "good trolling", which gets people talking, laughing interacting.

'Discussion' can also get people talking, laughing, interacting, and is open for all people to take part in. Not just people who have been here for years and know you are just having a laugh.

quote:

even some JLT fans, who earned my respect by showing such good humor (AT Armstrong springing right to mind).

This is not about 'earning' your respect. Just because someone doesn't have the same sense of humour as you, doesn't mean that you should respect them less. These foums are for everyone, no matter what their opinions.

quote:

It seems it's only the ones who seem to take themselves and JLT a bit too seriously who were somehow offended.

Or people who don't have the same sense of humour as you.

quote:

I agree that we're more than capable of having intelligent debate on this subject (JLT).

Good. I knew it could be done.

quote:

In closing, nothing I've ever said regarding JLT should be considered as a "personal attack" - I don't know him personally, thus that would not be possible. All I ever did was satirize him.

You may call it satire, but it still boils down to a (albeit minor) personal attack if you question his gender! emoticon

quote:

Well, now I guess we'll see if you two guys are interested in having an intelligent discussion about this - but I'l hardly be surprised if either of you decide to exercise dictatorial powers and ban me

Don't use the sob story. I think you'll find very few examples of me using any sort of admin powers on people since these forums began.

I like to take a backseat from all that kind of stuff, and only step in when I think something is getting out of hand.

You've been here for years. I've been here for years. We're all equal. I've had some great banter with you before, and I think these forums would be a poorer place without the talking horse.

But on this occassion, I just thought we should cool down on the JLT bashing. I'm sorry if this has been handled badly. We're all human. Someone's got to be a poxy admin afterall! emoticon

I hope we can put this behind us and carry on as normal. No hard felings?

Cheers,
Rahul

So I hope this clears up any issues regarding the JLT clamp down!

Myself, Milan, and The Talking Horse have put our differences behind us! emoticon

Hey, I was quite proud of my analogy. I even edited my original post to insert it! emoticon
