Well, who should make sure that no-one makes a copyright enfringing post. Remember, websites that hosts links to somewhere where you can see/hear copyright infringing material are hold liable in some countries.

I'd rather say, to be safe such links shouldn't be allowed.

Well, in some countries, just checking the internet is already forbidden.

What is on Internet, being lawful or not, is public. It is not up to the link poster (or to the webmaster of the linking site) to check if what's on the refered side is lawful or not...

Anyway, it's up to the Forum Administrator to allow or forbid links to U-Tube or other video sites. I would find it a shame to forbid it, since it is a very good way to illustrate opinions and share good moments, but I would comply (of course!).

True, well, if one forgets about the censorship that China and Denmark and others provides.

Not true. By posting deep links, you provide users a way of avoiding the navigation of the a certain site. That means that those sites will get fewer page views, and therefor will lose income from advertising. Several sites has been shut down due to deep linking.

Yes, it's up the to Administrator, afterall it is he who is responsible, and will be held resonponsible in case anyone wants to press charges. In this world, the, "I didn't know" answer is no longer valid, especially with the insane music business.

Well, some call it promotion, others call it infringement of copyright. With YouTube the problem is not so big, since they have several agreements with different labels, I am just not sure how extensive those agreements are.

I'm not trying to paint a doom picture, but saying "it's on the net, it's public, anything goes", is wrong. But I don't really care, I just come with some input. People can believe it or not.

Thanks for the input. Just a few comments:

1 Despite any censorship, what is on the internet is public information. Even in China or wherever else.

2 I'm not making a moral statement here. I'm only refering to the status of "public information" in legal systems where it exists. While I do agree that a website refering to another website by making the content of the latter become its own content might be an infringement of copyrights or authors rights, there is a big difference with a link mentioning the name and the URL of the refered website. As I already explained, there is no problem for a newspaper to refer to the information published by another - clearly identified -newspaper.

I don't get the point how the U-Tube visiting would drop just because links to U-Tube are appearing on other websites. To the contrary, this is the best of any advertisement. Furthermore, there is no problem for a website to restrict its visitors by asking for a password or a registration.

Another case would be a website linking to another website where unlawful material is posted (i.e. child porn). This issue is not about copyright of course, it's about criminal behaviour...

In general, I'm quite concerned by the way copyrights and other intellectual rights restrict our main background liberty. Because some abuse those rights, everybody has to be put under Big Brother's eye. That is unacceptable, untolerable and unlawful. As I have already explained as well, under Belgian law, and contrary to what some courts might have decided, there is no ground in forbiding private copy. When I buy a CD, I buy the right to put its content on another material support for my own private use. The right of private ownership is a fundamental right and any restriction to it must be, by law, interpreted in a limited way.

The best thing that could happen to U-Tube would be to keep being linked to websites hosting potentially interested viewers. And the best thing which could happen to bands like Purple and other would be to appear and websites like U-Tube. It's a wonderful free adverstising for on-sale official items (CD, DVD). The music business might be too hypocrite (or just too silly) to understand that...

Re: How can we improve the forums?

First post on this thread in 5 years!

Just a couple of ideas to tidy up the boards perhaps:

1. The chatroom forum could probably be deleted. The link to the chatroom doesn't work anyway and no one barely used it even when it did. There used to be about three of us in the summer of 2007 chatting away and listening to old Neil Young records.

2. Also, some of the sticky topics (Madeleine McCann and funny sings are two examples) may have run their course now?

Leave it with you.

Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback, Rahul!

You're quite right, tidying up is well due (he said, knocking over a stack of books on the floor next to his desk).

Thanks, yes all is well emoticon

Next week we go see Demon's Eye with Doogie White and get some good old rock'n'roll in our ears.

I'm not that often here anymore, but still peek in here and there.
