What's so bad about it, can't be any worse than English history.

Our books are filled of glorification. Everything in our history about the leaders pissing on the poor majority and pushing back revolution. Those who really wrote history were the rich and conservative people. Those who wanted to bring to country forwards are forgotten and rarely mentioned in history lessons.

More than our history I dislike our view of it.

But you could be right about english history. Overall the whole european history stinks to high heaven.

You're right, but I just want to live in a simpler time at a slower pace of life.

I find the modern world far too busy and uptight, especially Britain, I came across a wonderful description of my home nation, "half of the population has a rod up their backside and the other half is sitting on their's complaining".

I get your point and share your feelings to quite an extend. But, I belive there are lots of countries that offer better possibilities. You wouldn´t even need to travel it time. There are places you go you actually feel you´d travelled in time but you´re still there. Also germany has such places, but I´m sure england as well and of course any cave in scotland(some more parts in the same country!emoticon) could do that effect.

If you wanna travel far back before civilisation than you have to go further than the 14th century. Despite you want to live like Robin Hood! emoticon

I´d probably choose the ancient japan or greece or some point in time in the australian prarie and although I wouldn´t like the climate there today, we all know that the ozone hole wasn´t always there.

England does have places like that in the West Country and the far north but the illusion is ruined the second you get to a town. But being born here I don't find it that exciting really and the political situation and the national work ethic really get me down and I'm almost completely sure that I won't be spending my entire adult life here.

I've always admired the French for their healthy disregard of authority, refusal to take major responsibility seriously and just generally being so laid back and there are some beautiful places in France so that's a possibility. emoticon

Oh, and why ancient times?.

Ahhh, France! Yes I´ve been to Strassbourg, but that´s all!emoticon

I like the fresh as well for beeing generally left wing orientated(the mass demonstrations against Le Penne[sp?]quite impressed me). Well, their arts, their way of living, the free mind. Yeah it could be quite nice there, but none would unterstand you as they´re about the only nation in the world that refuses to learn the english language(well, a certain war could get the blame for that).

Ancient times as wisdom was regarded higher and people were generally more interested in understanding their environment instead of getting their pockets full(at least the two parties were balanced the other way).
If you go to japan today you´ll have two sides. One one hand the most beatiful nature that could imagine and on the other side industry, ugly metropoles and captitalism and commerce in their worst forms.

Greece today could be okay, though. Very, very very nice people you´ll find there.

No one understands me in England either so no difference there. emoticon

I've been to France many times and I love it, I shouldn't really because England and France are each other's traditional enemy, and I agree with what you said about it and Japan. Germany also intrigues and I've been to it a lot...but that's a bit of a mute point because the last time I was there the Russian's garden fence was still up.

Ancient times might just be a bit too far removed for me.

ritchie's hair...
living in 14th century europe... oh yes, a "slower pace", and open sewers, rats everywhere, dying from the flu when you're 8, never take a showe, teeth fall out when you're 20, hard physical labor... unless you meant that you want to be royalty in the 14th century, but then, if you were very rich now, you could (probably) choose whatever lifestyle you wanted.

i used to have this longing to the medieval days too, to be a nun or a witch then... but honestly, i wouldn't move in time at all, because a) i think it's easier to be a woman now than it was before, at least in certain places; and
b) i do believe in reincarnation... why bother going down the same paths again?

How about 100,000 years in the future? Just to see how it all turns out, catch up with all the history to that date and make sure that they still listen to decent tunes.
We can read about the past in books and from what I can tell, we have it a lot easier now than anybody ever did in the past. The romantic notion that those were more peaceful times is complete bullshit. Imagine going to the local blacksmith to have a tooth extracted, maggot ridden worm infested meat, crap TV or no TV (depending how far back you go). Sure there are moments in history that I'd love to have witnessed first hand, but there are so many I couldn't possibly choose one. No give me the future, it might be bleak or it might be Utopia. Who knows?
