Re: Football...PROPER football
I was just about to post a message saying that Newcastle were holding their own away to Basle - and they promptly went 2-1 down
Suprise of the day was Heart of Midlothian getting a good away win this afternoon!

Re: Football...PROPER football
Well, it's 2-2 now. Alan Hansen would have a field day with the awful defending on show. It's quite frankly, appalling.
But Laurent Robert scored again. He's fast becoming our best chance of a goal.

Re: Football...PROPER football
Alan Hansen is very good at what he does now...which is talk.
Don't get me wrong, I respect (or should that be envy) the guy for following up his playing career by entrenching himself as one of the top pundits, in which position he earns shedloads for airing opinions.
Q is, if he is so tactically astute then why has he never tried to actually coach or manage?

Re: Football...PROPER football
It was a strange match. Both teams defended so badly, it was actually quite funny (or at least it was because we won it!)
But its great to see us score 3 goals and not have Shearer on the scoresheet!
Their first goal was an absolute screamer. Ronnie Radford has been remembered for years for scoring a similar goal. Bet this guy gets forgotten about pretty soon though.
As for Hansen, I think he always said that it was the stress which put him off wanting to be a manager.

Ah, Hereford, those were the days.
Surprised that a Magpie owns up to remembering the Radford goal

Re: Football...PROPER football
adams i think will do a very good job.
remember he has had 2 very different managers to work with, so when you lot grind out results, you can thank george graham and of course when you have the zest of french polish you can thank arsene!
oh and if he wants to know if he is getting a good buy, he can always ring bruce rioch.
after all the only good think he did for us was to bring in bergkamp!
as for the europe thing?
i really have no idea why we are so bad, but there you are i have said it!

Didn't Bergkamp only play well once Rioch left?

Re: Football...PROPER football
depends what you mean.
i went 2 weeks running around that time.
the first game was against west ham and we won on a dodgy penalty and he could not hit a barn door.
the following week was against southampton.
we won 4-2 and he got a brace and a particularly stunning second.
from then he developed the class that he has been known for.
in fact the season rioch left him and david platt the 2 rioch signings on the last day of that season scored in a
2-1 win over bolton to squeeze us into the uefa cup.
