KULA:SHAKER

In summer of 2001, I picked up their "Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts" album. ((c)1998).

Very interesting, and a good mix of hard rock, 60's retro, and middle eastern influence.

What do others here think of this album, if you've heard of it?

Having already mentioned my bias toward the "Mark One", sixties sound, you could guess that probably my favorite song on this album is "108 Battles (Of the Mind)".

I also dig "S.O.S.". It has an accelerated sense of urgency a lot like the "Mission Impossible" theme song.

The organ solo in "Sound of Drums" sounds very "Doors-ish" aka- Ray Manzarak.

"Great Hosannah" and "Last Farewell" are in my opinion the main bulk songs of the album, and what carries the album.

Haven't heard it for ages, but I remember thinking it was pretty good. I have a boot from them from Birmingham (1998?) and it's decent stuff. I have their K album which was excellent at the time, and still sounds good now though it's spin time on my CD player is infrequent.

Shame the band didn't last. They were certainly more interesting than a lot of the other Indie britpop acts floating around at the time. Crispian Mills can now be seen in The Jeevas, which is basically Kula Shaker MK2. More psychedelic pop.

Yeah, I liked them too. Decent psychedelic pop and like Rahul said much much better than the rest of the brit pop dross around at the time (Oasis being a good example). Their cover of Hush was nice enough and they always cited Purple and Blackmore as major influences.

What was the Purple link? Wasn't Rog's nephew in the band or something?

Something like that. I think they even asked Roger (because of this link) to produce one of their albums but he had to decline because he was on tour at the time. Mills was also usually seen with a black 70s style Strat onstage, fairly obvious how he got the knack of using one of those! I remember watching them on Jools Holland a few years back and seeing a Purple TOTP clip played when they were asked about who their influences were! About the only reference to Purple I have ever seen on that bloody show! emoticon

I seem to remember young Crispian wearing a MarkIII t-shirt on TOTP once?

And yes, I agree - a great band.

Alonza Bevan, the bassist, is the son of a cousin of Roger's wife.

This'll turn up as a trivia question sometime, won't it?

Not to sure about the TOTP link but the first time I saw them do Hush was on the Ginger Wingers TFI Friday and he was definately wearing the IN ROCK t-shirt for this one.

Shame they didn't do any other Purple stuff because it would have bought the real guys to the notice of a younger audience.
