I've always given Blackmore credit for pretty much refusing to get into a sort of 'pissing contest' about such things, like comparing how any of the 'replacements' have interpreted/played the material he helped create & make famous to his original treatments.

Plus he's played a sufficient amount of covers himself to know that an interpretation is an interpretation, and never the same thing as an original.

I don't quite 100% buy his claims that he never hears/heard it - I feel he's trying to appear to be too indifferent, if you know what I mean - but Blackmore - again, to his credit - does exercise discretion about appearing to be unnecessarily critical.

I think that's partly also because he knows the kind of questions he'll get about it. By simply saying he doesn't listen to them, he can swiftly avoid getting into discussions about his replacements.

I wouldn't be surprised if the various Bonds practice the same tactics with journalists and fans.

Did he actually say that? Or is it just your own reading of it?

Nope. In the swedish guitar magazine Fuzz from 1996 he comments about Morse (but not Satriani) and has only postive things to say (of course since he is a clever man), but not that much of the rest of the band and mentions that he was tired of Gillan´s voice rather than his appearence.
Believe it or not, but it´s there.

Blackmore on Satriani, Guitarist (January 1996) :-

He's a great player. He's got a wonderful technique and he plays some choice notes. But I remember I bought "Surfing With The Alien" and the first track I thought "God, this guy's good!". And then I heard the second and third tracks and still thought it was great. But when I got to the end of the first side - we had LPs then, you see - I found I didn't want to turn it over. I found myself taking it off and going "Right, that's brilliant. What's next?"

Blackmore on Morse, Guitarist (January 1996) :-

Brilliant guitar player. He was one of my favourites in Dixie Dregs. He was playing some stuff 15 years ago and I thought "Christ, who is this guy?". Very fast and very exact. Fantastic country stuff

Ritchie admitted that prior to adding his contribution to the "Aid for Armenia" recording back in the late 70's or early 80's, he was as nervous as hell almost to the point of being ill but he blew them all away with his sound.

Even Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden and many other big name stars including Brian May admitted that they were left in awe of the great RB.

I think Steve Morse is a great guitar player, and seems to be okay for Purple (better than Bolin for Dp, imho, but not by much). But I'd be REALLY excited to hear Schenker, Ulrich Roth, Gary Moore, and/or a few others play with 'em.

I feel that Ritchie was insightful in his comments regarding Steve. Steve has done a perfectly fine job with DP. It's hard to criticize him (OR Airey) extensively. If you want to criticize someone, criticize Gillan.

I think he has said nothing but positive comments on Bolin. One of them was, "he looked incredible, like Elvis!" He must have a point, a mate noticed the same thing when we were kids (the photo on the back sleeve of Last Concert in Japan), and I agree as well.

RB has also said nice things about Bolin's playing, can't remember any quotes though.

Btw, about Blackers19607's post above, the Armenia project was in 1990.

Blackmore has always been positive about Bolin.

quote:

I originally heard him on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album, and thought, "Who is this guy?" Then I saw him on television and he looked incredible - like Elvis Presley. I knew he was gonna be big.

When I heard that Purple hired him I thought it was great. He was always so humble. I remember he would always invite me out to his house in Hollywood to see his guitar. One day I went to his place. I walked in and tried to find him, but no one was around. There was no furnishings - nothing. I stayed there for ten minutes before he finally appeared. He showed me his guitar, and the strings must have had a quarter-inch of grime on them, as though he hadn't changed them in four years. I asked him when was the last time he'd changed strings, and he said very seriously, "Gee, I don't know. Do you think I should change them?"

In that same interview, he's pretty honest about his thoughts on Malmsteen and SRV, too.
