Purple's Satriani and Snakes' Vai: A True Guitar Powers
After watching the DVDs of former Deep Purple guitarist Joe Satriani's LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO and former Whitesnake guitarist Steve Vai's LIVE AT THE ASTORIA LONDON, I'd say that Purple is lucky to have Satriani as their guitarist even for a short period only.
Satriani's performance in San Francisco is one of the "best" guitar show I'd seen and heard, the guitar sound is clear and metallic, never a dull moment. Satch is a true and natural hard rock and heavy metal guitarist, "House Full of Bullets" is a cool performance.
Steve Vai's performance in Astoria London is also great, mesmerizing, cool..... A total performer and also a good showman, he knows how to play with the audience. This former David Coverdale's Whitesnake axeman is fun to watch, he can be great in Deep Purple.
The show also includes guitar virtouso TONY MACALPINE and perhaps the greatest rock bassist BILLY SHEEHAN, though Vai can carry the show himself without any star caliber players. This show is great from start to finish. The last song "The Attitude Song" is one of the best finale I heard, with four guitarists jamming a fourth guitarist appeared in a cowboy dress appeared with an unusual guitar and it also sounds different, the guitarist is ERIC SARDINAS, a good guitar player, but with a funny name, reminds me of my lunch and dinner in cans.

The bottomline is....
Joe Satriani should have stayed with Purple...
Steve Vai could bring a lot of excitement and metallic edge to the Purple sound.
Anybody seen these awesome shows???

Though I 100% wholeheartedly agree, Randy...
RS: Were you ever asked to join permanently?
JS: They did ask me to join, but I really had to think. I did have albums that I owed on my current contract at the time and it would have been difficult to drop that and become part of a band. And while I hate to say it, there was something about the band that always struck me as British. I just felt like an Italian-American coming along for the ride.
So when I added it all up, although it felt great, it just didn't seem right to me. I thought they needed to find someone who really wanted to become a permanent member. As it happens, they did wind up with an American after all (Steve Morse), which was a great move. - from a BBC interview with Joe Satriani as conducted by the Deep Purple FanForum's own, the intrepid

Re: Purple's Satriani and Snakes' Vai: A True Guitar Powers
I've seen one G-3 concert (Satch, Vai, and Petrucci) and I've seen Satch with Dream Theater. That stuff is impressive after about 2 songs, then it just bores the hell out of me. I can only take so much Instrumental music. My wife and I walked out of Satch's set (with Dream Theater) after about 4 songs. We nearly fell asleep. It was just as bad as the Yes show we saw last year. 100% boring.

Yep, you're right Ed, it's a choice between a great solo career or playing with a legendary band, I just wish that he stayed.

Re: Purple's Satriani and Snakes' Vai: A True Guitar Powers
I only recently heard a boot of Satriani with DP, for the first time. He played great!
And in some solos (like MIAL), he'd gone and listened to the original, using it as an inspiration and a starting point.

Re: Purple's Satriani and Snakes' Vai: A True Guitar Powers
G3 last year, with Satch, Vai and Fripp, was incredible. I thought I would get bored with all that guitar wizardy, but the guys were great. Steve Vai especially, put on a fantastic show.
Still can't listen to much of their studio work in one sitting, but live it was a whole different animal.
Don't think Vai would be right for Purple though. That guy was too heavy for Whitesnake, for Goodness' sake!
Satch on the other hand, could have worked, if the boots are anything to go by.
