Slaves and Masters
As a relatively new (one year) and relatively young (21) Purple fan, I had always heard that Slaves and Masters was their worst album. I bought it for cheap at a local CD store, and it is not a bad album. It is actually quite good in parts. Is it their best? No. But I don't think it deserves the bad rep it has. Just my two cents.

Re: Slaves and Masters
Musically I think Wicked Ways was the best track Purple did since they reformed in 84. Would have preferred Gillans vocals and lyrics to have been put with it though.

a) I think it was the best track on it's 'parent' album...but not the best track between 1984 + the time it was recorded.
b) Certainly Gillan's vocals on the track would've been preferred by me - but I don't know about the lyrics aspect. We can speculate whether the lyrics could've/would've been better with Gillan as the author, but I don't think we'll ever know for certain.

Re: Slaves and Masters
Well, I bought it as soon as I first heard "King Of Dreams". I have very conflicted feelings about the album... I didn't want to like it because, at that time, I despised JLT era Rainbow and I thought, "oh no. Richie's pop side is taking over again". But, really, it isn't that bad. It's just... different.

Re: Slaves and Masters
There have been rumors over the years that there were 3 tracks from S&M that had versions with Gillan doing some vocal ideas. These have never been confirmed. So, I am beginning to believe they don't exist.
I have mixed feeling about S&M. Instumentally it is great. I would love a copy of the album in instrumental form.

a) Very nicely put, SG! The only bit I'd've changed were it me speaking would be to soften the adjective "despised' as applied to JLT-era Rainbow. In all seriousness, I fully admit it wasn't my favorite era of Rainbow (big surprise, huh? ) so I could've done without it if it hadn't happened, but a bit of great music was created/played/recorded during that time of Rainbow's existence.
b) In all fairness, and being as objective as I possibly can be about the album, I have to agree 100% with that description - 'different'...yeah, that works.
Who knows? Maybe someday it'll be supplanted from last place on my personal ranking (most favorite to least favorite or best-to-worst, or whatever) of DP's studio albums.

Re: Slaves and Masters
In all fairness, it's probably a tiny bit better than "Stormbringer", which I rate pretty near the bottom.
