I believe the moniker that was coined for this lineup on the old forum might explain it - "Deepbow Rainpurple".

The simplified answer is that he brought an Americianised AOR vocal style to the band (nothing wrong with that, but it sat very uncomfortably with Deep Purple's reputation and back catalogue). Also the band were (IMHO) less than inspired on the S&M record. Plus his between-song banter sounds.... embarrassing.
No doubt others will have their own reasons for disliking him, or liking him for that matter. The stuff he's doing now is much better.

So can I understand that JLT with DP was disliked but JLT on his own or with HTP is no longer disliked in general.
