Can someone explain me ?
why JLT is singing so much better in 84 (I'm watching the last Rainbow show in Tokyo) then in 91 ?
Had he sung that way in 91, most of the sarcasms about him would have been keep quiet
And it is difficult to accuse the repertoire, so many people thinking that SM is just a Rainbow album !
With that singing, people could have hear the band and see it was very good musically

Re: Can someone explain me ?
IMHO, I think the problem may well have been 'the music'. After Graham Bonnet, RB wanted an even more sellable and pop-sounding group, and JLT fitted into that perfectly (it put me off Rainbow then, because that's not a style I enjoy), but they became very popular, many people liked the music, discovered Rainbow and Blackmore through that approach, and they sold bundles of LPs.
Come 1991 when DP were minus a singer and down to four members, RB and Roger Glover both knew JLT well and were willing to have him as vocalist. The result was a sub-standard studio album (fine as far as AOR goes, but not what the majority of fans were willing to pay for) and tours which exposed JLT's limitations as a 'hard rock' singer. Performing songs recorded by Gillan and Coverdale, it became obvious that he wasn't suited to that style of music much - the rest of the band, thankfully, realised it fairly soon and re-recruited Big Ian.

Re: Can someone explain me ?
JLT has a good voice when he doesn't shout and force it, which he does a lot since 1991 and didn't on the Rainbow albums.(I quite liked him with Malmsteen too).
He doesn't have a strong voice and you can really feel that he pushes it to its limits and it's not always agreable.
Same goes for Coverdale (who HAS a powerful voice)but for some reason feels like he has to scream his lungs out.It sounds so un-natural, and he's got such a beautiful voice when he sings "normally".And I understand that sometimes, some songs require that type of singin but not all of them.
That's probably how they ruin their voice too!

Good point - he was pretty awful at Donnington in '90 !
