emoticon I reckon FatLarry and ritchies strat put it a bit more concisely than I managed! It's the Pavarotti analogy that cracked me up - what's next, "Eminem: The Myxomatosis of Opera"?

Gee, if that's how Randi chooses to respond to some gentle joking, how're they gonna take some out and out criticism?
Here's salvo #1: Claiming that "every up and coming rock vocalist that I knew (local and national)"...that must include only themself and one or two others! Then again, if it accounts for a greater number, we now know who's responsible for the incredible amount of faceless, unmemorable rock music that the 80s produced.

emoticon Most of know how bizarre British journalists can be, but I'm assuming this is a US site?? Whatever, I think MrEd nailed it first time round - it should have carried a notice saying 'sponsored by the JLT fan club' emoticon

If I wanted to get insulting, I could point out that the words "journalistic integrity" are nearly completely mutually exclusive, too.
I think Randi needs to grow either some thicker skin, or develop a sense of humor. Just because someone disagrees with their opinion, all of a sudden it's a question of integrity? Here's another one, Randi - choosing Le Squeely One as the focus of an article about rock singers is enough basis for a questioning of the writer's intelligence and taste - I can leave the integrity out of it.
Of all of these vocalists you claim all wanted to emulate Le Squeely One's style of screaming, did any of them ever hear of:
Paul Di'Anno
Ian Gillan
John Lawton
David Byron
Rob Halford
Bruce Dickinson
Klaus Meine
Jon Anderson
Jon Oliva
Roger Daltry
????????
All of whom can/could vocalize circles around Le Squeely One, either asleep or immediately following a tonsilectomy.

I don't know if you really convience me here Ed.
Who out of these you mention where that great in the 80's? Some, maybe. Great singers, by all means, but I'd say JLT (and I'm talking strictly 80's here) is doing great in this company.

Re: New article

I don't think the point was whether the vocalists listed were "great in the '80s", but that the instance cited by the writer was that "every up + coming rock vocalist they {I}knew in the early '80s wanted to learn to scream like Joe Lynn Turner". I was just pointing out that they - and the author - would've been better off doing a little bit more research and by going back a decade or so would have discovered some much more appropriate subjects to attempt to emulate.
