Tommy Bolin by a long shot. CTTB is a much better album (IMNSHO) than any of the MK-Smiley albums.
Agreed!
Double ditto! One of my favourite Purple albums!

Re: steve morse or tommy bolin????????????????????
Gotta go with Bolin (BEFORE he got all f***ed up). CTTB is one of my fave DP albums. Paice and Lord were on fire, and Coverdale was on top of his game. The drug problems that plagued the subsequent tour hadn't reared thair ugly head yet. Tommy went downhill fast once the tour started. With Morse you know what you are going to get. Bolin was extremely erratic on stage. But when he was on, wow!! I know that some people don't like Morse's playing (I do), but there is no denying that he is consistent. When all is said and done though, it's Bolin.

Bolin for me. I just prefer that dirtier, grittier, funked-up guitar sound of his.

"Purpendicular" for me is a better album than "Come Taste The Band", but Tommy was more creative. Steve's repetitive on stage, but solid. Tommy had moments of genius, but all in all he was quite erratic. Maybe I just can't judge? It's a tie

Morse!
Bolin was a flash in the purple-pan and really didn't love "our team" like Morse clearly does.

As difficult as it is to say this because I really like Steve I would rather listen to CTTB than any of the Morse albums. As far as what they've done outside of Purple I would rather listen to Bolin too.

I loved Bolins stuff outside of Purple too. Teaser, Private Eyes and the James Gangs Bang are classics. Plus that song I told you about that I heard I'm sure was Bolin with the James Gang live.
Hang on..did I just agree with you?
You put a spell on me didn't you?

Re: steve morse or tommy bolin????????????????????
Nothing like a Steve Morse thread to bring out the anti-SM crowd (minus a couple of you). Now for a reality check. It's interesting that the Steve Morse isn't a hard rock guitarist chants somehow don't stick to Bolin. Bolin was a jazz rock fusion guitarist who did not fit the 'DP needs a hard rock guitarist mold' for which Morse is denegrated by some on this board.I personally think that is/was a good thing - in fact, with only a guitarist change in DP at that time the sound changed quite a bit and produced an album of style and substance that blows away Stormbringer.
I saw Bolin twice with DP - not even close to Morse. He was sloppy and when it came to mano o mano with his guitar and the crowd he was ok. I even had to witness him and Hughes swap spit which was pretty disgusting. Purple was in a nosedive and the band was very self-indulgent. As for stage presence, Bolin was more comfortable in a smaller setting (I saw him solo just before he died and it was a much better performance.) As far as charisma goes Morse let's his guitar create the presence he needs. No one's guitar playing I have seen live demands the attention that Morse creates.
