Re: Tommy's Funeral
Not a bad way of looking at it; Strombringer vs Fireball, etc. Cttb was a solid album, just not DP best one. But solid it was as a DP release.
My fav's off of this record have to be as follows:
Standing in the Rain (Echo land)
Alexis (Great tune)
From Another Time (Santana roots)
Mystery (Could it be Tommy singing with Roy Kenner.)
Bolin did great version live of Walk Away and Funk 49;; Pretty much in the note for note fashion and with the usual effects. I'm sure Joe helped him out with some of the riffs. Afterall, it Joe that got him the gig in the first place.

Well he should've asked Blackmore how to play the Lazy riff 'cause every time I've heard him play it he's a little off. And I don't even want to talk about his attempt at the solo. His Highway Star and Burn solo's miss the mark as well. Good thing JL could cover his feeble attempts. Don't get me wrong I love Tommy Bolin but he was sometimes out of place with Purple's back catalog. I'm sure the same could be said for Blackmore if he tried to pull off Quadrant 4 or Nitroglycerin. Both players are/were unique improvisors set in thier ways.

Re: Tommy's Funeral
I can understand a MK II purist approach on Deep Purple. But I 'm one of the crowd that loved his approach on Burn, Lazy, Smoke on the Water and Highway Star. He did a wonderful job while playing in this band. The addition of sprucing up songs with a twist is great. He had a knack for making a song more pithy. Tommy's approach to DP was valid then and today. He put his own artistic stamp on DP. I like it a lot better than Morse's approach.
I can see why Jon Lord and Ian Paice brought him onboard. The guitar and drums on Smoke and Lazy is an amazing sync;;;; Love the guitar intro on Lazy between Jon Lord and Tommy in Ausseieville. Amazing stuff. Tommy had alot more wideopen approach that worked. Steve Morse is too worried about offending anyone.
Oh did I forget the best version of Stormbringer by DP was with Tommy Bolin.
Morseville: Contact Lost and Black Night.
