Dr. John

Why did Dr. John get someone else to over-do Bolin's guitar work on the Hollywood Be Thy Name album? What was wrong with them? Was it a disagreement? Or was he just not happy with the final mix?

Theory is when you know everything and nothing works;
Practice is when everything works and nobody knows why.

Here we combine Theory with Practice: Nothing works and nobody knows why.

Re: Dr. John

I've got three tracks that are demo's for the Hollywood album, with Bolin on guitar. I think the key point is these were just demo's, done before recording the album. It'd be like expecting Tommy to release his Teaser demo's rather than actually going into the studios and recording his album.

Maybe Tommy was just available whilst the HBTN demo's were being recorded but unavailable when it came to recording the album.

I guess the key would be to compare the 3 demo/Bolin versions to the finished album version. I myself have never bought the Dr. John album, despite vaguely meaning to do so for years, because I am a lazy idiot.

In a Stan Sheldon interview, he mentioned that he and Bolin and Alphonse Mouzon played on some sessions for the Dr. John album and that he had a tape somewhere. I would very much like to go through his closet for him!!!

Not much to compare. From memory, the only track that was on the album (that was among the three tracks Tommy, Stanley and Fonzie did demo's for) was the title track. The standout demo track that comes to mind was Stick With Me.

I once read that even Tommy didn't know why Dr. John didn't follow through with the album or why he used other musicians - but I think there was quite a gap between the demo sessions and the album sessions.
