XLR vs. 1/4 inch

Why are microphones that run off XLR jacks considered higher quality than their 1/4 inch counterparts?

What is the principal difference between these two cable sizes?

If XLR is that much better, then why don't keyboards, guitars, and basses run off of XLR?

THe XLR stuff is usually used for 'balanced' cabling, which reduces noise and I think allows for longer cable runs. Mics that use XLR are usually better quality ( allegedly ). Usually when you start hooking gear up to a cable snake and on to the PA you will plug into DI boxes which convert the standard 'line-out' signal to XRL style 'blanced line'. Also and I'm no expert there is usually a -10db/+4bd difference in there somewhere.

At one time Rithie tried to use XRL for his guitar, to reduce the buzz from the Rainbow lighting rig. It didn't work apparently!
