Jon's first Hammond?

I know I've asked this before, but have gotten no straight, official answer, so I'll try it again:

Jon makes mention on the Perhelion DVD interview that he bought his "most recognized" Hammond C3 from Christie McVie (Fleet. Mac) in 1974.

But what was he using from 1968-1973?

I've seen him on stage all those prior years with organs that sound and look like Hammonds, but he makes no mention of where he got those from.

Were they on loan? Did they belong to the record companies?
What did he use to record Shades...Taliesyn...and Deep Purple?

I get the impression that he went through those things like Buford T. Justice went through Texas patrol cars while chasing after The Bandit! Very little itemization and accountability in the beginning, just played them all to death and got rid of them.

Only from 1974 on, did he seem to finally have one that he cared enough about to make notable mention of.

Can others shed some prominent light on my questions?

Thanks.

John Coletta mentioned in an early interview during the Roundabout days, that he bought the equipment for the band, including Jon's organ...

As far as I know JL owns a couple of B3's - when he bought them, where and from who I have no idea. There's a lot of pictures of young JL where he has a sit down at the Hammond B3 but if it was owned by him the pictures don't tell of course. I read somewhere ages ago that from around 68´ JLs stage gear on the Hammond side was an A100 cut in two for ' easy ' ( Ha ha ) transport and at some point it was rebuild into a C3-look-a-like-flightcase-thing and then later, around 74´ replaced by the Hammond C3 of Christie McVie .. one thing in common besides all being Hammonds and equally great organs, JL has never used the pincable to connect to his dual 147´setup but has allways used a linesignal to feed his preamp. A Leslie setup that to the best of my knowledge was bought way back around 68´

In an interview he said that the Hammond he used in the early seventies "died" in 1973.

Ramshackle,

Explain what you mean by what you said above.

Do you mean he went 1/4" cable from the organ guts to the preamp and then went Leslie Pin from the preamp to the 147's?

Or did he go 1/4" cable from the organ, through the preamp, and all the way to the Leslies? In which case, how did he get the Leslie's to accept a 1/4" line feed, since those things need not only signal but also voltage to run?

Since 1/4" taps out of a Hammond output tend to be very hot (volume-wise), it wouldn't surprise me that what you say is correct. That would help explain how he got such searing hot signals in his solos on HUSH, PAINTER, WRING THAT NECK, KETUCKY WOMAN, etc. in the Mark I days (before tapping straight into a Marshall--which was a Mark II phenomenon).

It's just I'm having a hard time picturing at what point he converted from 1/4" to Lesliepin, before entering the Leslie, and what he would have used back in 1968 to make that conversion. Today in 2003, they sell gadgets to make the 1/4" to Leslie pin adaptation, to do just that quite easily, but I don't think that technology existed 35 years ago...or am I wrong?

Please shed light. This topic of conversation is most fascinating to the B3 Burner!!!

Yap fascinating indeed emoticon

You 'just' take the signal right off from the G-terminals inside the organ and connect to any kind of valve-preamp that can take that kind of input level, from there you can plug into Leslies / Marshalls , and there you go Jon Lord sound in any case !

Of course you have to have the different plugs for different types of ampflication but that's really no problem, it's not an adaption kind of thing - it's a matter of rebuilding the hard way emoticon

You don't have to use the Lesliepin to power the valves inside nor the motors, you can just open the amp and modify the powerconnection, the Leslie is build with a converter anyway - the tricky part is to get the motion go slow/fast/stop, but that can be done with a cable from the organ to the Leslie and even through a pedalswitch that will allow you to choose hand and/or feet action.

There you go emoticon

The reason why I mentioned the Leslie issue was only to prove the point that his 147s are that old, and that they are 147s - I quess you know the impedance differ from C3s B3s and A100s balanced / unbalanced - that part goes away when you connect to the G-terminals ... ( you can't use an 147 for a B3 straight away )

BTW. in case you don't know -
to really make your leslie scream like JL you'll have to install a twin driver thingy ( and some extra strong speakers )

Image

I use the twin driver configuration in my Leslie 145 setup

Image

as you can see the 145 is a little shorter than the 147 but else identical just with a 12" speaker instead of 15"

Re: Jon's first Hammond?

Ramshackle,

Great pictures! And an equally good description of the process. I guess I'm guilty of doing it the easy way.

My chopped Hammond BV has a Trek II preamp built into the organ that already has BOTH 6-pin leslie and 1/4" out jacks.

I tap 1/4" into a second tube preamp (outboard) that sits on top the organ. From there it goes Lesliepin out to the Leslie, and the Leslie rotor speed is controlled from an extension toggle switch....Again the builders of the gear make me look more innovative than I really am!!

I play with a Leslie 125. Twelve inch bottom rotor with no upper horns. One day I hope to get a 147....ahh if only twenty dollar bills grew like wild blackberry bushes, I'd be sounding like JL in no time!!

At least the outboard amp is configured to send current to a 147, not a 122. I had my choice, the 147 setup is what's needed for 125's, and if I ever had a choice later on, I prefer a 147 over a 122. 147's better for rock applications, 122's are more for jazz. (But then again, I'm sure you already knew all that).

Thanks again for all your input.

I have a question,as for sure we have some experts here.
I think I've noticed,on the Abandon concert here in my city, that Jons Leslie horns were rotating always with the same speed,no matter what he played.I was quite confused about that because normaly the rotation speed depends on how/what you play.If that could have been true, why is that?

experts, strong word ... naah just some Hammond experience .. emoticon

Same speed through the whole show - and you could see both horns ? In that case my best shot is = technical hitch emoticon

JL is such a great player that he can pull it off even with a 'broken' gear, I guess he used the vibrato knob at the V3 setting to make some kind of 'motion' to the sound - if you listen to early recordings of say Wring that Neck then you can hear the effect of that 'swirling' the V3 setting adds to the sound. Not at all like a spinning horn in fast mode but still a great way to make the sound 'move', just* add some volume swells to it ..

* that will keep both your hands and at least one foot busy for a while emoticon
