Here's another late reply... :-) quote:That must have been quite a feeling seeing Jon Lord in person. Is this your first time having met him, or have you met him before? Some JL fans will go their whole lives wishing they could do what you've managed to accomplish...talk to the master himself. It is always a nice feeling to meet Jon Lord. I have met him several times before going back to the Slaves & Masters Tour. I have a soft spot for the man and his music and have been fortunate enough to meet him in situations where that feeling has become apparent without actually saying so. Allow me to mention a few select occasions: In 1994 I travelled to Switzerland to catch a rare solo show he did there at an open air festival on a lakeside between the Alps. Picturesque. The music was Jon with a rhythm section and a string section performing selected works from his solo albums. I was able to meet him there and discuss this very unique project. In 1998 I followed a section of the US package tour with Dream Theater, ELP and DP. It was a treat to catch Jon trading 'war stories' backstage with Keith Emerson - two of the original greats exchanging hearty laughs. I caught Jon's last ever show with DP in Ipswich 2002. An emotionally charged evening not just for Jon, but for most people there. There were visible tears in his eyes during the last songs. I have a review online here: http://rasmusheide.dk/music/reviews/020919ipswich.html If you ask where Jon's tear and sweat soaked towel from this last DP show is I might be able to give you an answer. ;^) Call me a nostalgia freak, but those were very special on show that night. You don't finish a loving 34-year relationship with a cold heart. And then there was Hell, which was another high point in my travels to see Jon perform his music. He is a master and a true gentleman and I value the opportunities I have had to meet him. quote:I'm curious, Jon's demeanor that day: You say he was a "relaxed" Jon Lord. He always comes across to me as especially controlled and composed, so it's hard to ever picture a "stressed out" Jon Lord. You are absolutely right. He oozes relaxed calm. At the Hell blues gig he did with Miller Anderson the two were hanging out with friends backstage while Chris Farlowe did the first half of the show onstage. Before taking the stage Jon called out across the room backstage to Miller asking which song they should open with. Miller suggested Green Onions and Jon said that it might be a good idea and that they'd just see what happened after that. A very relaxed attitude 15 minutes before headlining a festival. :-) I have seen Jon under more strenuous circumstances. At the 1994 solo show he was physically shaken and almost out of breath after stunning version of Bach Onto This! At a show in Hamburg on the first leg of the Abandon Tour someone threw a plastic beer beeker at Steve. Fortunately it was not a bottle or a glass as was reported by drama queens also there, because it missed Steve and hit Jon right on the forehead. It nearly knocked him unconscious as he struggled to regain his balance after the shock and stumbled out behind the amps. When he returned five minutes later (to a massive cheer!) he was mouthing the words 'You bastard!' at the crowd and looking very pissed off. I felt a little sick from watching all this. quote:Did you get the impression that even after the formal press conference was over, that he'd have loved to stay and talk to you all for another 2 or 3 hours over a couple pints, or did he begin to have a hint of impatience, where you got the impression that he was anxious to move on, and he had had enough? In this particular situation he was taking time out of a very busy rehearsal schedule to do the press conference so there was never a chance he'd sit down for a chat. I believe him when said he'd had a good time answering questions. It's not often Jon receives this sort of attention on his own and I think he had an urge to speak up after leaving DP one year before. You will note his very emotional reply to questions about the Ipswich show. I also know he loves a good story and can reel them out for hours with a glass of good red in hand. :-) quote:Now, the PR organizer you spoke of at the top of your article, Knut Morten Johansen: I get the impression he just wanted to shove the whole thing into high gear, rush it along, and take all the fun out of it. Jon Lord seemed to politely recognize that Johansen was in charge and only doing his job, but that remark about "already taking a minute" seemed to be a friendly jab at Johansen on Lord's part; partly in defense of the journalists, but also as a subtle way of telling Johansen to "lighten up!". Having actually been there, do you agree with what I said, or did you see the social atmosphere a little differently? There's often an unspoken agreement between the assistant (in this case Knut) and the artist, that the assistant be the 'bad guy' who shoves proceedings along, so that the artist will come across friendly and accommodating while still managing to stick to a tight schedule. There is no sinister motive in this, it is a practical working relationship where each does his job to keep things going. Jon was very busy that day and also wanted to leave. I think the atmosphere between Knut and Jon was informal and respectful during the whole weekend and I know Jon enjoyed himself immensely while he was there. It was Knut's responsibility to make sure everything ran smoothly so Jon made it to all the appointments in his schedule. It takes more work than you might imagine to stage a two-hour show with nearly 40 musicians onstage who's never played together before. quote:Are music industry journalists just as "pushy" and "aggressive" (in terms of trying to talk over each other to get in the next question), as political journalists? Or are you guys a completely different breed that respect one another more? In other words, was that day talking to JL in Hell, like a Sunday in the park for all of you, or was it "serious business" and competition to you all? Knut was good at taking the lead when everything started. Throughout he unselfishly directed the proceedings and made sure everyone got even opportunity to ask their questions. You will see from the photos that it was a very small gathering in informal surroundings. Jon was late and we had all been waiting a while, chatting about Jon and other things, so the mood as very relaxed and friendly. A lot of things can be said about music journalists (often they seem to only use half their brain when promoting artists out of a 'duty' agreement with the record company!), but it is nowhere near the kind of cut throat atmosphere that you see when political journos struggle to get a word in with a minister who really only has a few minutes to talk to 30 reporters! Music interviews are very rarely about 'revealing' something or getting information from one side in a conflict story. It is more about relaying an image of the artist's current situation, his emotions, the influences behind a project, creating a mood, setting a scene, etc. Reviews are of course also about evaluating an artist's product, which can be done in a number of ways (and that's another long discussion). There is very rarely the conflict element which makes other forms of journalism seem an uncomfortable struggle to get at a person's opinion or view point. I think there was a good atmosphere that day in Hell. Some people asked a lot of questions, others were happy to rely on what was asked by others. I think the most unusual bit that caused a roar of laughter was the guy who wanted to buy Jon's ring modulator! :-) Did I answer your questions - or just waffle endlessly? ;^) - Rasmus nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rasmus Heide)Tue, 06 Jan 2004 21:24:33 +0000 Re: Jon Lord in Hellhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p113035,from=rss#post113035https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p113035,from=rss#post113035Rasmus Heide, Thanks for taking the time to reply to me, and 2 mos. after my post no less. He seems to genuinely enjoy the attention, but at a very low-keyed level, and on HIS terms. [nothing wrong with that, just a general observation]. I'm glad to see he doesn't think he's too old to rock and roll, and that he plans as many new musical adventures as his body and mind will allow. His feelings about music being a vast melting pot with no catagories or demarcations, is a noble concept. It allows for free-form expression, and validates everyone's contribution to music. As an artist, I applaude that viewpoint. However, the businesspersons and promoters who make their entire living, placing artists and music into tidy little categories, would never allow nor accept such a viewpoint. I think Jon's point there was more a state of mind and a philosophy than a call to action. But I liked it none the less. The interview itself: Why in God's name at a railway station? They knew trains would be coming in and out all afternoon long, interrupting the interview, so why was that not taken into consideration ahead of time? What about a studio, a bar, an old Victorian house, a quiet park, in the Cathedral, in the blues club they played Sept. 14th, or a hotel conference room? Better yet, how about next to the runway of a major airport, so JL can talk over the roar of jets in takeoff all afternoon long? Other than that one detail, it was a good, insight interview, and I'm glad it was made available to all of us.
