posticon Helsinki & Tallinn - review

So, this trip was the highlight of the whole year for me, seeing Purple twice.

I spent the afternoon of Friday in Helsinki, going to some record-stores and going to a exhibition about the history of computer gaming (which was great btw). The record-stores I visited were Black&White and Music Hunter (thanks for the tip purpletemple!). From the former I bought two vinyls, Gillan's Magic (Finnish print) for 6€, and the original German print of WDWTWA, with even the lyrics-sheet. I only payed 12€ for it, and it's in great shape. What a bargain.
Music Hunter is a Purple-fans heaven, with one shelf dedicated to Purple & related only. There was so much to choose from, and I wanted to save my money for Tallinn too. I bought these three from there:
Tommy Bolin - Snapshot
Hughes/Thrall
Gillan - Future Shock

Then I went back to hotel to wait for the gig...

Helsinki 21.11.2003

Setlist:
Highway Star
Strange Kind of Woman
Silver Tongue
Knocking at Your Back Door
House of Pain
Lazy
Bananas
Contact Lost
Doing it Tonight
Space Truckin'
I Got Your Number
SM solo / Well Dressed Guitar
DA solo / Perfect Strangers
Smoke on the Water

Hush / IP solo / RG solo
Hit the Road Jack
Black Night

This was my first Purple gig ever, and it surely didn't disappoint me. I had a great seat in the right side of the stage, some 10 meter from the stage. The Bananas tour t-shirt was overpriced (30 bloody euros!) but I bought it still. Before the gig I saw a well dressed man with a camera on the side of the stage, and he surely must have been mr. Payne himself! I was on the verge of yelling his name to make sure if it was him as he was only standing 10 meters away from me.

The concert started at 20.15 when Uriah Heep took the stage. They were great, playing all the classics like Lady in Black, Easy Livin', Bird of Prey, July Morning etc. It was a really good show, with the singer moving all the time and Box smiling and making these weird gestures with his hands. At the end of their set I was wondering if Purple can top them.

At the moment Purple took the stage, about ½ hour after Heep had stopped, I knew who the real stars of the show were.
They started very powerfully with HS, and I could feel the energy flowing from the band.
They were tight as ever, and the power and force was amazing. Gillan sang superbly, his voice sounded much better than I had expected. His banter between songs was pure Gillan humour. The new songs from Bananas blended very well with the old classics.
I was mesmerized with the performance, and it got even better during Airey's solo spot, where he played a part from Finlandia-hymn, which is one of the most loved classical pieces to us Finns. Morse was also in great shape, but the star of the show was Paicey. He was great! The gig lasted something about 100-105 minutes, and I left with a big smile from the icehall. Truely a great great gig.

Then back to hotel to get some sleep before going to Tallinn the next day...

Tallinn 22.11.2003
Setlist: exactly the same as in Helsinki (which was a bit disappointing)

The Tallinn gig was in the recently built Saku Suurhall, which holds about 10000 people, and it was FULL. I had a standing ticket, so as soon as I got in I made my way near the stage. I finally ended up to the left side of the stage (where Roger usually plays) only about 4 meters away from the stage.

Uriah Heep weren't as great as in Helsinki their set was 2 songs shorter than in Helsinki (missing Look at Yourself and Bird of Prey which were performed in Helsinki) and it seemed to be a very routine gig to them. Good show still, but not as good as the previous day. Maybe they had been warned about exceeding their 1 hour slot, which they did in Helsinki. In Tallinn they played exactly 1 hour.

As in Helsinki, Purple took the stage half hour after Heep had stopped. It was a great gig, with the same power and energy as in Helsinki. Musically it wasn't as good as in Helsinki, but as I was so close to the stage it was a very good to watch. Also one Finnish couple almost ruined it for me. The man must have been drunk or something because he started leaning to others with his full weight, which was very annoying. One guy even pushed him with force after the Finnish guy had leaned on him. I had a disposable camera with me, and I took some 20 pics frome the concert. If they are OK, I will scan them and post here.
It was wonderful to follow Roger's performance so near him. He was great.
As I said before, this gig wasn't as good as Helsinki, but solos were generally much better. Glover had longer solo than the previous night, and between Hush and Hit the Rod Jack Gillan sang some children's song (?). The lyrics went something like this:
I love my wife
I love my dog
I love my pee wee (??)
I love my tv

I thought it was great.

I was exhausted after the gig, I stood there in the same place for about 6 hours in a row (3½ hours waiting and 2½ hours listening). But it was a great experience, the Estonian audience was really excited and they participated better than in Helsinki.
Great gig!

Oh, and a sidenote:
The ticket's in Tallinn cost 350kr (about 30e) and what was weird was that the t-shirts cost more than the ticket (400kr)!
I guess many didn't buy the shirts in Tallinn considering the lower income there.

Very comprehensive indeed Niko,
I have to say that I'm getting more pumped as thing's take
shape, and it's really starting to unfold.

After the Berlin release party being not much but a tease
with an under rehearsed set,I have to admit I was becoming a little discouraged with thing's.But the AVO session has me in much better spirit's cause of the exuberance and
on stage presance by the whole band,Gillan in particular
with his between song banter at it's best ever, and Morses
relaxed more fluent and solid groove, making thing's alot more of a bang for the buck kind of set.

Gillan act's almost as if he knew everyone in that town by
name, yet I still see lot's of room for improvement.
That's a very uplifting thing, thank's for your review
and you have been sworn into the league of Purple at their
best...live and in concert.

Btw,the German WDWTWA complete with lyric sheet is quite a
gem....make that Gemma emoticon
The German vinyl's are my favorite pressing's in the world.

Apprecieted Niko. I'll see them tomorrow, my second time now, it's been almost to the day ten years. Then Ritchie was there, now I look forward to see what current reincarnation of the band is up to. The setlist looks great, even if an hour or two short maybe... emoticon

YESH! Got the pics I took in Tallinn. Some are good, some are abysmal because of the hands and heads in front of me. It'll take some time to get them scanned because we have to use my father's workplace's scanner.
