Re: "Live Encounters" DVD

Just stuck this on the laptop DVD-drive.

A bit of a surprise to see Steve back on stage left (audience POV) and a long-haired Gillan throwing it all about. His voice isn't very good, but there's no faltering his energy onstage. In fact, the whole band seem 'on' for this one, so there's plenty of good stuff to get into - including Roger not wanting to end Maybe I'm A Leo. ;^)

The camera work is pretty good, with some interesting overhead views down through the lighting rig and close-ups of every player. I can't make up my mind about the sound. The CD sounded a bit thin on the stereo, yet the volume and mix seem to fluctuate on the DVD (through headphones).

I've seen the packaging on all the various formats of this release, and they've done their best to deliver. All of them are plastered with live photos from Bruce Payne's archives (i.e. not all relevant to the show at hand), and in good quality too.

The plethora of formats this comes in is manic! One DVD and/or one CD (with one collectors vinyl edition) would have done the trick for most of us. Still, the gatefold digipack combined DVD and 2CD *is* nice. :-)

Reviews to [email protected], please, so we can get that feature up and running. :-)

It's not a bad show.

Just been cruising the interviews in the bonus material. This is interesting stuff. They do re-tread a lot of old stories, but they do it well and each player gets to say his parts. Well worth getting.

Is this the only "offical" live version of Maybe I'm a Leo? Off the top of my head, I can't recall another version.

Rasmus, you have been a very generous expressing an opinion like the above...
Here's what I wrote in some other place:

Well - I have checked it as far as the package goes... A big disappointment, but remember who manages them... The best photographer among managers, the best manager among photographers - who has to make his living somehow...

NO single picture from 96-97 era, instead all of them feature the late Lord period AND there is also an Airey picture!!! Some less oriented fans may guess who is this bloke singing at the keyboards with Lord and Gillan, AND why Gillan sports long hair on the video, while on pictures he has only short hair...

What is more - during the development stage of the whole project, Polish Fan Club offered their help (royalty free of course) to Bruce in the shape of excellent pictures of the very show, but NO! Who needs photos from the concert to illustrate the packaging of the footage of this concert? It seems that Bruce likes to earn money that he pays to himself... And the pic of the Gillan in the jacket, holding the tambourine is disgusting. They should employ a good PR and image manager - or perhaps they already have one (imagine who?)

All in all, my rating of this release goes like this:
- package and pictures selection: 2/10
- setlist (i.e. elimination of NOC): 0/10
- mastering and mix: 5/10 (very slight, if any, improvement to the TV broadcast)
- title: 1/10 (well, maybe I shouldn't complain, after all they could title it "Live in Katowice" )
- interviews 9/10 - probably due to making them by fans, who know what to ask about...
- extras 1/10 - the same, well known and already worn pictures made by Bruce (and only Bruce - "don't ask me, I'm only the photographer"

Am I too severe - maybe... But just take a look at Queen's DVD release from the Wembely concert and you'll get the answer...

So - all in all, pity that another chance of making a decent looking documentary was wasted.

It's not a bad show

That's another story emoticon
