Re: "Live Encounters" DVD
Picking up here from the closed thread on this subject in the "Purple discussions" forum.(why?)
Ormandy had something that raised an eyebrow;
quote: Speaking of concert videos,
A quote from the Darker than Blue magazine:
The NOBODY'S HOME video was shot on March 5th 1985 at the Civic Centre in Providence Rhode Island. They filmed the FULL show for MTV. It was never screened. However Space Truckin' from the gig was aired on French TV and is just as good as the Nobody's Home clip. There is a real edge to the number, good sound and mix too.
I hope this show will be released someday, maybe as part of a DP DVD set.
Hhmm,as far as I know the "Space Truckin" footage you speak of is on the "NLAR"DVD,and is by far the single worst Purple footage I have ever seen, including bootleg material!
If this footage is not from Rhoad Island, then I'd like to know where it is from?If it IS from RH,then I'm not interested in ever viewing that concert.
However...some more of the footage from Rhoad Island 1985 can be seen in the promo video for "Hush" 1988,clear as day,but of course it's in B/W.

ST is from Alpine Valley Music Theatre, August 1985.

Yeah, it's pretty bad alright, Gillan's completely out of breath and forgets to come in on time for the last chorus, Blackmore seems to be playing along to a different song(!) and offers up an excruciatingly bad solo etc. Having said that the Lord solo saves the whole performance and you can't really know whether the whole gig was as bad as that specific song performance (I suspect it wasn't, there were plenty of other sloppy Space Truckin's on that tour and the next one).

Re: "Live Encounters" DVD
Thank you Nigel...and Christos,I hope you don't think I'm not aware of ST being played poorly on that tour and the next one.
Hardly a point worth any significance since having over 40 shows from the PS tour, but it wasn't all that often they played anything poorly on that tour, just the odd bad night on one of the biggest rock concert tours ever,to date at the time,I think they were allowed some technical difficulties, unless we're talking about Ritchies terrible sound throughout the tour, now that was inexcusable, looking back anyway.
I wouldn't rubbish it just because of one bad song, but if it had actually been the Rhoad Island show, well I feel it would have totally ruined what I'm pretty sure just may go down in history as some of the best Purple footage there is so far...now if they would only give up the rights to it!

Re: "Live Encounters" DVD
I can't belive it why they didn't put No One Came It was the highlight of the concert , I have full show taped from polish Tv and NOC is perfect ! I don't understand them...anyway I will buy it , whole DVD is 200 min long ,the concer is 115 min ,so extras are about 85 (!!!) min long.

Re: "Live Encounters" DVD
Hmm,I wonder why?
Maybe they had problems editing the film during the strobe lighting part.
This sounds like it's going to be great,if they had a bad night on that tour,I doubt this is one of them.

Re: "Live Encounters" DVD
The "Space Truckin" clip from the New Live and Rare is NOT from Providence. I have both clips they are completely different. Providence is right on hot. The one from the DVD is from the US in August I believe in California or something. Check the Ian Paice Not for the Pros DVD. It has the drum solos from both of those shows and mentions the location.

Actually I would rather see the show from Australia '84. The clip of Black Night was on the NL&R DVD. This show was filmed. I verified it with Bruce Payne.

Re: "Live Encounters" DVD
All of the Sydney shows were filmed one way or another, but only that night and some parts of the other nights were pro shot.
In the bootleg videos, you can see cameras on the stage at ALL of the shows.
Nigel Young already confirmed that the ST from NLAR dvd is Pine Valley,or somewhere.
