Re: Perihelion?
This is a great DVD. I bought it at my local DVD store (I'm in the U.S., so I know I'm probably in the minority on this forum which seems to be predominantly European). I was making a choice between it, and another one that was filmed in Poland (I don't recall the name of the DVD) which cost about twice as much. I decided to go with this one in particular because it had 'Lazy' which is one of my favs and it was cheaper. It turned out to be a great purchase because they did a great show in this one. A couple of highlights for me were 'No one came'. The beginning sounds rocky though for a second; and you see the JL looking at Paicey with that "Something doesn't sound right" look for a split-second while they try 'find the one' (trying to find the down-beat). I think it's because the intro to the tune is made up of those guitar(/bass?) quarter notes and then the other instruments and vocals come in. Anyway that's one of my favorite 'Fireball' tracks and it's a standout on this dvd. I also liked that they did 'Mary Long'. I like how you see JL ripping it up on the hammond and you can tell he's enjoying playing those older tunes too. I imagine it brings back the feeling of those days for him, if only for a fleeting moment when he's doing those songs. It's hard for me to believe that JL would truly be resigned from doing a tour with Deep Purple again. Maybe I'm just being hopeful. I'm kicking myself for never having gone to see him play here when I had the chance. I think any aspiring rock or blues keyboardist in the U.S. or in other countries would have to recognize JL as the definitive talent when it comes to rock hammond. He's one of the guys that inspired me to play keyboards. In fairness, I will say that when I saw the current lineup of DP play at the Wiltern in L.A. in Feb. '04 I was impressed with Don Airey's playing even though we know he's not Jon Lord. It's like comparing apples and oranges really to compare them as players. Airey's hammond sound/playing was, well, beautiful at that show. Enough said. One more comment on the Perehilion dvd: Steve Morse's playing is truly jaw-dropping. I didn't realize that guy was that good. It's easy to see why he's their current guitarist as he just plain shreds as is evidenced in 'Ted the mechanic'.

It's called "Live Encounters" and worth the money.
Perihelion is a slight disappointment to me because of the bands sound, which lacks excitement and energy ,especially Jon sounds too thin.Infact the whole band sounds too "nice",a rather good example to confirm MKII-fans in their opinion that this line-up isn't much more than a RB tribute cabaret.
"Live Encounters" which sounds very authentic and furiously kicks off with Fireball,"Bombay Calling" ('though bad camera work) and the technically perfect "Total Abandon" are much better examples to show the world that this line-up still has a lot to offer.
The interview section and picture quality are great on Perihelion but there are much more energetic Morse line-up shows out on DVD.
