Re: CHOHW best DVD

I Like the Bombay Calling DVD. Gillan sounds pretty good, for the most part. Morse hadn't had a chance to bugger up stuff too much at that time. Some TBRO goodies. The first taste of "Purpendicular", etc. A very good performance.

I also like Gillan with long hair. It is a great visual. Very rock and roll. It adds to the aura of the performance. If you look at the picture on their web site these days, Gillan looks kind of psychotic. Not a very flattering picture. The whole group looks like a bunch of thugs and criminals. Not a good aspect from the lense or angle. emoticon

CHOHW is maybe more interesting than good, but also musically there are pleasing highlights there!

I would like to throw in a penny for the Heavy Metal Pioneers thing, even if the DVD has no extras. It's not reckoned as very good, for obvious reasons, but still I like itvery much. I find it packed with interesting clips, interviews and live stuff. The main snag is that this ain't suited as an introduction to purple, as there rarely are any connection between sound and pictures. I love what I hear and I love what I see and I would love it to fit, more than occasionally. But that aside I love the programme!
JLT bashers also get what they like, as his appearence is one of the most dull appearances I've ever seen anywhere.

I can care less what men look like,I just like
the overall oppritunity to see and hear them at the same time. The laser effect's on CHOHW is a highlight for me
I'm fine with that as far as visual's go.
I don't often slag someone for their fashion sence unless it's a man in women's clothes.
I can't seem to be able to pick a dvd or any other footage for that matter,as "best" they all have something exciting
to offer, even the mark 3 and 4 stuff with the exception of maybe
Rises Over Japan, hey that's the only mark 4 video I have.
Oh well,I mean well anyway.

I find the first two songs are a little weak and Gillan sounds rough (Hiway Star and BN) but it really picks up after. TBRO is really done well including the lights. Lord's solo is easily one of my favorites of his. Sound wise, the recording of Total Abandon has to be the best I've heard.

I have CHOHW on VHS (I suppose it's identical to the DVD?) and I was surprised at how good the show was. A much better performance than in my memories of the night, especially Blackmore, who plays brilliantly (when he can be bothered to come on stage). Lord remains the star of the show, though, which was exactly what I felt as I left the hall way back in '93. It's Gillan, not Blackmore, who is the weak link here. His voice really was poor and his attempt at Child in Time is actually depressing emoticon

I also have a Japanese copy of CHOHW on vhs
it's very high quality and cost me a whopping $108.00
+tax U.S. dollars.
Expensive but worth it to me at the time,
now it just sit's in my collection replaced by the dvd
so it will remain in good shape forever.
Not a bad collecter's item.

I dont own Total Abandon but from what I have seen Come Hell Or High Water is the best. Excellent playing from everyone and Despite Gillan not being in great form still sounds good. This DVD shows the greatness of Deep Purple
