Most Underrated Deep Purple Studio Album
I know, I know - in some people's view none of Purple's studio albums can truly be considered as 'underrrated'. But try to be as objective as possible - those that think that - and pick which one best fits that word - 'underrated'.
If one of the 8 remastered/remixed anniversary editions is your choice, pick "other" and specify the title in a post...
...topic/poll inspired by our favorite "Compilation Fairy"...er...I mean our good friend, Lake Geneva! /

Re: Most Underrated Deep Purple Studio Album
That's a tougher question than on first look Ed. I voted WDWTWA, after much deliberation.
Purpendicular was a close second, so I thought I'd mention it just to get a rise from you.
WDWTWA gets my vote because it is dismissed by many critics as an uninspired album, and that MK2's magic was fading as evident by this album. Wasn't Jon Lord even uncomplementary of the album?
I may not rank it as highly as IR, Fireball, or MH, but it is certainly in the same calibre. Outside of perhaps Purpendicular, DP has not made a better album since. Every track on the album is a winner IMO.

a) Blame The Compilation Fairy! Er...I mean Lake Geneva! ( / )
b) ...ask and ye shall receive, Richard!
c) Critics? Anyone who'd aspire to a job with that word as it's description or even a part of it's description should be brought out to a clearing in the woods and disemboweled under a full moon with wooden cooking implements. Critics - The classic "Hindsight is 20/20" crowd...well, fully 98.9% of them, anyway...in my non-humble opinion, of course.
Yes, Richard, I believe "WDWTWA?" is fairly consistently dismissed by the people who recorded it - Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord + Paice - and I've for the most part put that down as more a reaction to their personal feelings about what was going on with the band and with each other than the overall quality of the album, musically speaking. I respect that to the band members - as artists - their personal feelings are inextricably intertwined with the music, whereas mine are of - to me - of a slightly more 'objective/impersonal' viewpoint. It seems - in a lot of ways - to me, the album was/is thought to be more of a burden/obligation that had to be met at the time as opposed to an album they felt that received what to them would be the proper attention to creativity and willingness to record an all around 'great record' - for lack of a better word.
For me, as of this very minute, "WDWTWA?" ranks 2nd to "Fireball" as my favorite of the 4 "Crown Jewel" studio albums recorded by MkII in the early 70s
d) Ahem...er...argh...ah, the hell with it, it's not worth it! ( / )
e) I take it you mean every track on "WDWTWA?". If there is anything that can be considered a "non-winner" on the album, it'd be from either "Super Trouper" (sorry, Rahul ) or "Smooth Dancer"...neither of which I could fairly say are "losers" or mere "filler", either...in my non-humble opinion, anyway.

I voted for Stormbringer.
It's much better than Burn for instance.
Not better than CTTB, but at least CTTB ain't under rated here.

Definitely Slaves And Masters! Though I love the album, unfortunately many DP "fans" don’t because of Joe. Think he did a great job and he "only" wrote the lyrics. The music was done by the old chaps. So give Joe a rest, will ya.

Re: Most Underrated Deep Purple Studio Album
I've narrowed my choices down to picking from among:
The three MkI albums
"Who Do We Think We Are?"
"Perfect Strangers"
"The House of Blue Light"
"The Battle Rages On"
"Abandon"
..all keeping in mind that while I personally may not consider the album I select as "underrated", I probably feel that others (the music world, other Purple fans, fellow forum members, etc.,etc.) tend to overrate it. So, basically what JFM + I had a discussion about on...was it the "Most Overrated" thread orn "Purpendicular - Revisited" thread?...damn, now I went and confused myself!

Re: Most Underrated Deep Purple Studio Album
I had three choices: BOT, WDWTWA and TBRO. I voted for TBRO, because of of those three it certainly is the only one to recieve serious kicking from DP fans. It's a fine album, save for some vocals and the production.

Same goes for me. I like this album, and "The Cut Runs Deep" is one of my fave DP tracks ever.

Re: Most Underrated Deep Purple Studio Album
Shades Of Deep Purple
I know it's highly appreciated among some hardcore fans, and the remastered editions + the "Early Years" compilation pays the debut great respect, but still I find it underrated in general.
I know the embryonic band had a lot development coming, but there's aspects with Shades I find close to unique even in the complete DP catalog.
At this point the band had nothing to live up to, no success to match, everything was undone and untried. Somehow that shines through, in a "let's try this, let's try that" attitude that knows no limtitations (like the fear of repeating themselves). On top comes that the album is recorded straight off within hours, no pedantic repairs or other soul-killing deconstruction of recorded material in order to make it "perfect". Music ain't about being perfect, it's about enjoying. "Shades of" is a discovery adventure between the written and the improvised, like a bird making it's first successful flaps with the wings. In this attitude, in the performances more than in the songs themselves, one can hear that this band ain't no ugly duck, this is a swan about to unfold.
In my humble opinion, that is.
