Hichhiker's Guide - April 29th

Well, I can only hope that Hollywood doesn't screw up one of the most hilarious things ever conceived of! I'll be checking it out...probably the first time I've actually been looking forward to a new movie and actually planning on going to one of the horrible, cramped little rooms that they pass off as cinemas in America in at least 3 years.
Adams' series of books was wonderful - as was the BBC television series - so here's hoping that Hollywood doesn't lose the plot!

Is it an entirely British production? If so, there's a great chance it'll be a great movie then! emoticon

The only true way to appreciate "hitchhikers" is via the original radio series.

like they say radio is like television but with better pictures .... !

The books were an effort to cash in on the radio popularity and the subsequent TV series was awful.....

Ive seen a clip from the latest movie and Marvin the paranoid android is so far from my mental picutre I am already dreading the result..

ppppshhhhht glad to be of service...!

I heard there is even a book based on that Lord Of The Rings film. Geez, what people do for the extra dollar...

So, my girlfriend´s been to London over the weekend and she´s seen the film there and told me she liked it even if they radically changed quite a lot of things without reason. She said it wasn´t really close to the book but an enjoyable film.

Can anyone confirm this?

Well I've only heard volume 2 of the radio series so I can't really give a definitive answer but I liked it, although there were huge chunks skipped over to condense the story down to 2 hours.

Oh, Milan, it was actually a radio series first. emoticon

Is that true? I got the books when they were just new(1994 or so), so he wrote
the books based on the radio series then, like a book based on film?

I thought it was radio series, book, tv series, then film. The TV series was in 1981.

Maybe new in Germany emoticon

My books are dated '79, '80, '82 and '84 (I don't seem to have the fifth book in the trilogy, somebody must have borrowed it). The radio series was first broadcast 1978. The TV series was 1981, as RH said.

The film was different from the preceding versions -- but they were all different from one another, anyway. In each new treatment, some jokes are lost, others are expanded, and others come in out of nowhere. It's all good emoticon

The film was much better than I had feared it would be. The casting was very good (Zaphod steals the show), and the Vogons are portrayed wonderfully (they looked like they were designed by Gerald Scarfe). It wasn't side-splittingly hilarious, but I never thought any of the other versions were either. There's a lot to smile at, and a lot of clever humour that's there to think about rather than laugh at, which is exactly how I feel about the original. Though there's also some nice slapstick which works in the visual medium.

And the best thing is, it felt British. Which I really didn't expect.
