I agree; just like "Who Do We Think We Are." Both are solid albums. emoticon

I wouldn't know a bad word to say about this album. The melodies, the rythms, the different musical colours. It's to my taste, and I don't seem to tire from it even if I play it a lot!

As I've said a few times before, I couldn't care less what Blackmore may think of funk, or "shoe shine music", as long as he plays it like this!

I think there's a big difference in the guitar playing on WDWTWA and Stormbringer...while the riffing is perfunctory on both....the solo spots are far better on Stormbringer...

The solos on Hold On, title track and Lady Double Dealer are great....

SOF is a great song too....

The hole is exactly in the center of the record, which makes it spin around really good. "When I wake up it has to there, My Mooooooonnnneeeeyy".

It's a good record, it's shows Purple EVOLVING, PROGRESSING and EXPERIMENTING, just like Mark 7 and Mark 8, coz people will get bored if they only do albums like IN ROCK and MACHINE HEADS.

I just wonder why it did NOT sell as good as MIJ and MH???

The funkier part of the record is IMO the better one.
Great vocals by both Coverdale and Hughes.
The Gypsy and Holy Man are two true gems.

Nice to see the band trying to evolve and to change sound. Too bad Ritchie didn't like it and left.

Yeah and some like my neighbour actually smashed it up into pieces and slammed it into his garbage bin within the first week of release - he quickly told his mates...

...maybe he had a lot of mates!!

Certainly, when I asked him the week after its release if I could borrow it the look onm his face was a picture - "It's in the bin mate" as calm as you like. He was brought up on IR/Fireball/MH/MIJ and to him Stormbringer was just...

...well, garbage

He didn't bother with CTTB even when I offered to lend him it - for him it just wasn't Purple any more full stop.

Holy Man and Soldier of Fortune show the best of the light side of DP in the 70's.

Gypsy was the best vocal harmony song ever done by DP. (Thought it should have had more words in it though).

It does sound a better album in retrospect. I recall being pretty disappointed with it when it first came out, though. After 'Burn', it sounded weak in almost every department. These days, I can enjoy it a lot more as I'm now, possibly, more forgiving!

What amuses me about the whole Blackmore not liking the 'funky' sound thing is that many of the best DP Mark 2 moments are decidedly funky but merely with a rockier edge...'No, No, No', 'No One Came', 'Never Before', 'Maybe I'm A Leo'...to name a few. Purple always had the funk and could swing like !@#$ live.

Or perhaps it's because some of us as we get older (me included), don't always want to be hit over the head with IN ROCK for example. I've been saying for awhile that a lot of the Stormbringer material would go down well with some of today's adult classic rock stations.

Most middle-of-the-road music fans like their hard rock soft. emoticon
