Blackmore's Prince of Darkness image.

How did this name or image came about?

Was it for his prickily personality?

Or was it for the occult thingy? I don't think Blackmore was into the Crowley thing like Page was and maybe Black Sabbath was. RB has denied every being interested in Crowley. He just like to contact ghosts like any paranormal medium would.

I didn´t see it as anything else but an occasional joke, before a certain Forum member started promoting this image in every post he writes here.

Black Sabbath, into the occult...Come on. Have an interview with Geezer and Iommy on VHS, where they are telling a story about when they rented a supposed haunted castle or something. They fled the building.

I will admit to having made Ritchie the anti-christ in a round robin story on Tony Iommi's message board. I also had him place a curse on Ronnie Dio to explain Dio's wierd behavior in the story and then enslave the Tyr lineup of Black Sabbath, minus Iommi, to make a new Rainbow album.

Ritchie's actions through the years have not done anything to put down being labelled the Prince of Darkness. Certainly he has done more to deserve that title than others, like Ozzy Osbourne. As for his image, I think that it has changed over time from a manic axeslinger in the 70s to the mysterious wandering minstrel of today. There seems to be a common thread among some people, myself included, that Ritchie has an ego that almost rivals G-d's and that he is maybe a little too temperamental.

All of this aside, I think we should wish ye ole Man In Black a happy 60th birthday.

It "came about" the same way most of the bollocks about Ritchie came about. He sat down one day with his publicist and they discussed the alternative strategies for the image of Deep Purple and it's members. Ritchie has said this in interviews( no doubt someone here can locate the exact inteview for you ) Ritchie drew the card as the mean, moody, black one, the one with occult interests and so on. Ritchie then just played to the image at every turn.

He's got a new publicist and now he's the chatty host at his gigs the press friendly, "can do interviews" type of rock star, rather than the unapproachable one of before. To all intent and purpose Ritche has had a personality change, which of course doesn't actually happen in the real world, BUT does happen in "rock-star fantasy" world.

Take a look at the facts, he's given more press interviews in the last year than he has in his whole career before. He hands out beers at shows to the audience, signs autographs , smiles and generally is conviviable. SO where is the "Prince of Darkness", occult weirdo gone now......he's been airbrushed away by his publicist! That awkward, pain in the ass rock star has vanished now.

Ritchie's previous image was designed to appeal to his audience of that time, beer swilling, hard living, hard partying macho men( Ritchie did complain at the lack of females at his Rainbow gigs !) in dennim and leather( comprising a fair bunch of assh*les, misfits and weirdos as well! ) Now that wouldn't suit his current market, so it's now re-designed to appeal to his current audience of grannies, children, fairies, and other waifs and strays.

The entire BLackmore product, is nothing more than carefully crafted illusion to evoke a very specific reaction from his fan base and it works very well for him.

You're right: Ozzy's 'Prince of Darkness' image is total crap (btw, I like Ozzy). You know, 'diary of a madman', 'bark at the moon'... it's all about this campy, plastic b-movie (or even z-movie?) 'darkness'.

Princ Of Darkness is a vey good Megadeth song found on Risk ...that's OK it has nothing to see with the topic ...

but on a different side, we have here in France a comic book titled "Blackmore" in which the character named Blackmore is evil, a kind of Prince Of Darkness!! (I still wonder why the authors choosed this name ...)
