The average age at Purple concerts

On the Swedish BingoLotto show, Gillan again made the comment that the average age of the audience at Purple shows these days is 18.

Is he saying this jokingly??

I would have thought it's more like 38.

Hello John

the only thing I can come up with on this insistance of theirs...Roger mentioned it recently too...is the word "average"
anytime you have a wealth of numbers to crunch...it's averaged into the different things that make it up,so when I'm averaging my crews productivity, the number will never reflect what the individual sees as their efforts, because to get an average, you have to break things down, when dealing with thousands of people, and a various amount of age groups within,I can almost see where they arrive at this equasion...but it does seem just a tad exaggerated,I'd say judging from the shows I've been to over the last two decades,it's more like around 25...and the different cultures tend to outnumber the different ages, and then some.

I'm almost positive it's a management figure, and a slightly altered one at that...Gillan is still going on about that "who let all the kids in" like it just happened yesterday...I'd say in these publicity situations he's having a blast telling the same old stuff and laughing, because he knows it will work for them,as they're bound to not know what on earth he's talking about, and the result is,they feel informed by him,as he laughs it off.
Better than treating them as if they are actually sub humans...like someone we know of,has done his entire career.

@ BigJ

Roger says that too somewhere else.
It seems they believe in it.

But Ian also said once he can see only the first two rows of the audience emoticon

The average is surely around 38. Is it the so called midlife crisis emoticon

I don´t know.... But I think that in prague during last gig it could be around 25 - 30 years, but not more!!! But yes, 18yrs are bit "underrated" emoticon

I can only speak to the last shows I saw int he US (New Hampshire and Boston) but there was a mix of older and younger fans...from 12 - 80...I swear I saw a grandmother of 80 with a walker in NH and a DP t-shirt. Now she really messed up the average :-)

There were plenty of younger fans maybe 50% including my 15 year old who is an avid fan of the band. (I';ve done something right as a parent :-)

So I'd say the average was about 26 years...(grandma schewed the numbers higher.

I don't doubt there's quite a few younger members of the audience. At a Purple show a couple of years back, I saw two girls with their parents. The girls can't have been more than 11 or 12. My son came with me to see Dio a month ago and he's 10, and he'll probably be keen on seeing Purple too. But these are in the minority. The majority of attendees seem to be round about my age bracket (40) and when the numbers average out I can't believe that the average fan attending can be less than 25 at the very minimum.

No! (I haven´t seen anyone like that on Prague gig)

I mean a people who really KNOW who are they going to see.... emoticon I don´t know about other countries, but at least, on some czech forums and sites about DP, there are average age about twenty too... emoticon I think that 25-30 is realistic.... I think that DP have a lot of fans between young people!

We're talking about 38 countries here, not just a few in Europe...

It's surely no 38 worldwide,and I've seen them in 4 countries myself.

There was a show in 2004 in Canada that I attended, and I'm telling you it was young pickins in there, young mothers and fathers with their pre teens...I must have seen atleast 10 kids sleeping by the time TL had finished and Purple were a third of the way through their set...young kids all around me,and the rest in view were all seemingly 30ish,so it all depends on where they play, and when you add it all up,I think they could tone the average down a bit,but it's really not that unbelievable to someone who cruches numbers for a living.emoticon

Well, I suppose when they play in Liverpool, the average age of the unmarried mothers that go to the concerts are 14. So if their kids are aged about 1-5 years old, that would help the UK average age. emoticon
