Ritchies Retribution!
Retribution for Ritchie
For those that have criticized Deep Purple for allowing Ritchie to dictate his 80’s Rainbow to the Deep Purple reunion, you should not listen to Rapture of the Rainbow, or Rainbow of the Deep.
As I put ROTD in for another spin and crank the car stereo (a good one at that), I was listening to “Don’t Let Go”, it was "Clearly Quite Obvious" that it has a chorus rhythm and guitar line which was exactly the same used in Under The Gun, which came from Stone Cold. Then it is followed by a run from Rainbows Bad Girls. I was expecting Gillan to sing “Searching in the darkness…for Stupid Bastards and religious freaks…fading out of sight…under the Stone Cold Guuuuunnnn…..cause their bad girls……The intro and main song construction is very 80’s Stevie Ray Yawn.
Instead, as with most of the album, Gillans lyrics were sung into a cheap mic and tape player (without ever hearing the compositions laid out before him) while taking a dump on the toilet (hence, some of the weird, constipated drawn out vocal whines on Wrong Man) and given to Bradford in hopes that he might find a spot on the lp for his meandering, pointless yammering. I guess it makes sense that Gillan went to record his lyrics long after the band put their bits in since he went into the studio two weeks after a tour was complete. It sounds like to boot. There seems to be no cohesion.
Of course the title tunes main riff is half of the notes, played rather haphazardly of course, from the bridge solo in Gypsys Kiss, which also came from a Rainbow tune in the guise of the ending bridge of Ritchies solo to Death Alley Driver. I guess Airey and Morse couldn’t fit in all of the notes together without tripping over themselves. This song just wreaks 80’s Rainbow all over it. Eyes of Fire comes to mind, only the vocal is nowhere near as good as The Squeely One. Not that I’m complaining cause it’s a huge step forward from the days of 80’s widdlin which is evident on the rest of this CD. At least it has some character.
Then there’s “Kiss Tomorrow Goodby”. Haaagh, more Blackmore retribution. Opening drums from Unwritten law, from another album under fire for it’s Rainbow dictatorships inclinations. Then it breaks right into a riff taken directly from “Cut Runs Deep”, the most criticized lp for the dictators aspirations towards making DP a 90’s Rainbow, only to repeat the Stone Cold/Under The Gun lines when Gillan annoyingly repeats his Bad boy inclinations (“I did a bad thing”, repeat ad nauseum).
I think it’s also funny how Roger Glover spoke one day about DP’s lyrics being more current as opposed to David Coverdale still singing from his penis like a 20 year old, but yet I hear two songs, one about Gillan still thinking about sex all day(Back to Back) and the other about what girls he likes, or dislikes(Girls like That).
I think it’s only natural that two fifths of Rainbow are in this band and their major influence, musically had to have come from their leader/dictator. It’s Clearly Quite Obvious that Ritchies influence is overpowering when Gillan isn’t present for the writing. Of course, it’s always Clearly Quite Obvious that Ritchies influence dictates the live set, and if they play the three 3 Rainbowish tunes of which I speak, then the percentage gets even higher in Ritchies favor. It’s just a shame that Gillan didn’t listen to the tunes before driveling all over the place in a nonsensical way, or it might have sounded almost not quite as good as a Rainbow album(minus the silly guitar wibblin of course).
On a positive note, I did rewind, for the first time back to the beginning of a song, and I even remembered the name, to When Time Began. A good tune overall. The intro’s a bit lame, but picks up after Smiley gets his generically balladized two sense in.
This is the first time I have mentioned Ritchie in reviewing this CD, and I was hoping to get away from that with this new one, but here we are again and this time it’s in a good way due to the fact that at least they are trying to play something with substance, and of course that’s always been Ritchies philosophy.
I would be willing to bet, God forbid(because BN is much better and Candice does a much better job of CIT), that if Ritchie were to say I’m coming back, that Gillan, Glover and Paice would jump right in while Lord packs his bags for the next tour and Morse and Airey do that other silly project they’ve been doing with Ozzy covers.
. Dis-claimer-When I first started to write this review I still hadn’t remembered any of the names, but put the CD in while I wrote this and made a point of name dropping.

Re: Ritchies Retribution!
pretty harsh, but hey...
Purple, the actual Deep Purple... is still Ritchie's legacy like it or not.. The current line up could call themselves anything.. I havnt heard ROTD and i'm not gonna criticise it, i will probably like it a bit, Bananas was okish... But Purple is something else.

To Ritchies Strat:
I guess you spend a lot of time with ROTD to discover all these Rainbow connections...

blah blah find a fault blah blah self-important waffle blah blah closed mind blah blah predictable negative Morse comments blah blah myopic Blackmore deification blah blah.
You don't like it, RS, and that's accepted and respected. Just lock yourself in a room with Blackmore's back catalogue and no internet, be happy and stop repeating yourself. You might find yourself diverting and appeasing and amusing, but you bore the crap out of me (whether I agree with your comments or not, I might add), and I get the distinct impression that I'm not alone in this.

Re: Ritchies Retribution!
On to the battleground:
But then again, Ritchie's most famous riffs: Highway Star, SOTW, Space Trucking, Burn, Man on the Silver Mountain are all variations of the Speed King riff which was Roger's. Hooray for Rog. He gets his retribution now
My ears aren't musically trained enough to see links between:
Don't Let Go from Stone Cold
ROTD from Gypsy's Kiss
KTG from Cut Runs Deep
But I can say this. If there are links, they're certainly improvements on the originals. Well....Stone Cold is a damn fine tune, but right now I just love Don't Let Go.
Heh heh heh

Mine are, and he's talking tedious, tenous nonsense.

RS's comments are usually fairly tongue-in-cheek (I think!), and I find myself having a few chuckles when reading them.
If Gillan can take them in good spirit (as evidenced by some of RS's words appearing on his website), then surely us mere mortals can take them with a "pinch of salt" too?
