If Coverdale replaced Gillan
I was just listening to ROTD apart from Don Airey's contribution i thought it was all a bit predictable, Do people think that if Coverdale replaced Gillan Paice and Morse might let loose a bit more. Do you think Gillan's vocal range is now holding them back. I say this because while i do like the tracks ROTD, CQA,KTG and btb i feel the rest of the tracks only go as far as gillan can now go vocally and Morse and Paice are just making time. Morse in particular seems to have run out of ideas. Also Coverdale does like to write wih a partner while most of the songs Purple write are starting to sound like the Ian Gillan Band.
Please dont shoot the messenger i put this up discussion and would love to hear your thoughts.
yours Keven

Re: If Coverdale replaced Gillan
I don't think Gillan's voice is holding them back. If something is, it's songwriting. There are three great tracks on ROTD, the rest all have some good parts in them. The choruses are much weaker than the other parts of the songs - interesting thing as with typically in pop music it's the other way around.
But ROTD is a big step up after Bananas and especially Abandon: of the latter album I only remember remake of a MK2 classic and a few bits of lyrics. Apart from tempos, the songs all sounded the same.
I wonder if with ROTD they have started to find themselves - and each other - as songwriters (let's face it: Lordy wasn't too much into writing rock tunes, which is both strange and understandable considering his writing outside DP). As musicians there is no problem, quite the opposite. What a group of musicians!

Re: If Coverdale replaced Gillan
Coverdale has lost it completely.
Gillan does a good job (yeah according to his age)
But people who critise Gillan that he doesn't sound anymore as in the 70s, seem to forget something.
How much vocals were there in the 70s?
When they played Space Trucking for over 20 minutes he only had to sing a few minutes and then could go out to have a cup of tea (or two, or three).
In this way you can save your voice for years.

Yeah, Coverdale sounds like a choking ostrich. But, on the other hand, Gillan is kind of off sometimes as well.
Maybe there was less vocals in the 70s shows, but there was more drugging and boozing. I don't know which is worse.

Coverdale is not a recording artist anymore.

I'd rather have David get back with Ritchie to do some more hard rock. or Glen with Ritchie...actually ANY one of the old DP/Rainbow ingers back with Ritchie (including ol' Rod) except Gillan. OUCH! Hey, I didn't YOW!...I KNEW people would get mad at me for this post but HEY WATCH IT!!!!......

Re: If Coverdale replaced Gillan
IMO Coverdale lost it as early as in 1987 with the terrible record of the same name. Now he is touring with a band that he still calls Whitesnake, but we all know (don't we?) that M3 is more Whitesnake than Whitesnake these days?
Would love to see Coverdale with Blackmore, but not in Purple. Gillan is still a really great vocalist, even if I don't like the vocalsound on Bananas and ROTD. I blame that on Bradford, whose production sucks big time!!!

I'd simply be much more excited with a Coverdale/Blackmore reunion than I was with the often insipid Page collaboration.
