Argument over Gillan's power (in his prime) and just what is vocal power

Gillan is just as powerful as MM within Gillan's non-falsetto range....

Just because MM has a higher non-falsetto range than Gillan does not make him a more powerful vocalist.......
Limo Driver:
Yes it does actually. It's like when two drummers never miss a beat, very precise, but the one who plays faster wins precision. Mike Matijevic has a much larger nonfalsetto, and in it he holds as much power as Gillan's falsetto. It's much easier to be powerful in falsetto. Thus MM is more powerful than Gillan.
Is the last response just pure illogical lunancy....

He was the singer for a band called SteelHeart and he did the vocals for a movie called Rockstar with Mark Walberg.

A singer's power comes from his/her diaphram, & learning to control your breathing has a LOT to do with singing ability. At the age of 60 Ian will naturally start to lose some of his range & power. I'm not having a go at big Ian, just merely stating a fact.

yes, paintedhorse is right - and if you smoke, drink and shout a lot then your voice can be ruined within a very short time - IG was lucky to have kept the 'quality' whereas the power on certain notes was already weak in the 80's - he learned to sing Child in Time differently - still good though...

It seemed to me Gillan blew it out with his stint in Black Sabbath; but that's actually okay, as Born Again has to be one of the all time most powerful Rock vocal performances ever. One of Gillan's best, in my opinion. In fact, I think that it is THE best, beside the Made in Japan and Stockholm performances 1972 and 1970 respectively.

Re: Argument over Gillan's power (in his prime) and just what is vocal power
while we are discussing vocals and gillan vs halford vs anyone else....assuming we are talking about their primes, one thing (that i always observed was)for the most part Gillan reached the higher notes by screaming (eg: live child in time, all the screams everywhere), he did use falsettos sometimes (vocal dual in strange kind of woman, studio recording of Child in time (?) etc)...whereas someone like Halford seems to reach the higher parts with falsettos mostly (not that i claim to be an expert on Judas Priest material)...my question (and observation) is: isn't it more difficult to produce those high notes with screaming your guts out than falsettos? doesnt that put gillan in a much appreciable position(at least in my books)?....of course, he had to do that embarresing falsetto screaming/vocals in the end part of the newer cover of the older song (i cant remember the name) in ABANDON...let me know your thoughts...

Re: Argument over Gillan's power (in his prime) and just what is vocal power
though for some, it would be a bad performance, in 'in concert' i love the way IG completely looses his vocals while doing the second scream in child in time and recovers briliantly in the highest screams...just gives you an idea of how tough controlling( or not :-)) vocals might be...
