Pre-conceived ideas...
Much talk about what might be called entrenched views recently on this here forum.
I must admit that like maybe for a lot of people, before I came on this forum I had a map in my head of what DP's album output was and the merits and demerits of the band members.
I must say that the map which has been in my head for a period spanning about 33 years has changed in only about a month or two. I still have the map in my head - but it has a lot of modifications and offshoots and notes appended.
I suppose that means I've taken on board a lot of what folk say on here and the views of others (surely not!).
Albums that have had a resultant shot in the arm and seen in a new light because of this process with a renewed status: Burn, Stormbringer, Perfect Strangers.
And then there's Abandon. It seems to enjoy/suffer a somewhat mixed reception within these pages.
Yes the map in my mind's eye has changed.
I suppose its all educational really.
Maybe the forum should have an educational status and be part funded by the education authorities... or the lunatic asylums!

Re: Pre-conceived ideas...
I was once scolded by 69 one day for mixing philosophy with DP, but what you wrote is a perfect illustration of what hermeneutics defined as the fusion of horizons

Re: Pre-conceived ideas...
I too had had a well-entrenched viewpoint/opinion of my own changed by involvement with the Deep Purple forum members. The seeds of the change were sown on the old Highway Star forum, and the funal change occurred here about 6 months (?) ago.
I finally had to agree that "Come Taste The Band" was one helluva fine album and was entirely deserving of a spot on my own personal "Top 10 Deep Purple Studio Albums" list. This epiphany was more than inspired by the correspondence with fellow forum members on the old & new forum (a lot of whom were & are the same people anyway).
While most people do come aboard with pre-conceived ideas/notions/opinions/viewpoints (I most certainly did), I think it's always a good idea to keep at least a semi-open mind and allow room for at least the possibility of a re-thinking of those ideas/notions/opinions/viewpoints. Doesn't mean anyone has to change any of them - just remain open-minded to the possibility that someone may have some influence towards helping that happen, if it's to be. If not, so be that too.
Nice point about that asylums, Alan!
