When does IG appear in the programmes?
Daniel
Off the top of my head, I think it is in the last half hour of the programme, between 11.30 and 12.00!
Don't quote me on that though!

Re: ian on radio 2 tracks of my years
On a more serious note:
I've just discovered this message thread on one of the BBC message boards.
I like the anecdote about when the lights went out during a show
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio2/F2142831?thread=1359547
"Was thinking about a time when I went to see Ian Gillan in about 1977-8 just after he left Purple and was doing the Clear Air Turbulance tour. Think it was in Manchester, there was a power cut. Some emergency lighting went on but everything else stayed of. IG just sat on the edge of the stage and talked to us all....a full house. He came accross like a real decent guy."

Nice thread! He does come across as a decent guy in these short interviews. That's what I love about Purple interviews. They are always well-mannered, interesting and insightful. No dumb rockstars here!

Re: ian on radio 2 tracks of my years
Finally (), here are the main points of what IG had to say about each of his choices.
Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys)
Tribute to the genius of Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds.
Would have made people sit up and pay attention in Liverpool.
Episode 6 passed their BBC Audition, so they used to sing on the "Light Programme".
As a harmony group they used to sing GVs.
And yes, he does still get them!
Roxanne (The Police)
Found this stunning the first time he heard it.
The singer comes in unexpectedly.
He admires Sting's voice on this.
An incredible performance
BTW: Stuart's brother Ian used to work as an agent in the US for IG.
Please Please Me (The Beatles)
This one had a very long story.....
IG was in a bar in Nashville with Bruce Chanel.
BC's biggest hit was "Hey Baby"
BC was in the UK in Manchester and needed to get to London on the train.
He had only got his ticket and 10 shillings.
[Our old money! Was = 50p at the time of decimalisation]
He felt down in the dumps so he had a couple of beers on the train.
When he got to London he discovered his next gig in Croydon.
So he had to walk.
IG went to a Numismatist's to get him a replacement 10s note.
<Here is the point!>>
BC introduced IG to Delbert McClinton.
DMcC taught John Lennon the basics of how to play the harmonica.
And JL plays Harmonica on PPM.
Phew...........
Vincent (Don McClean)
They had heard "American Pie".
DonMcC moved the folk/blues style out of the genres.
Again an incredible voice.
Also how it is possible to write intelligent lyrics.
RnR doesn't have to be just a thrash-up and aggressive
And to have Vincent Van Gogh as the subject!
One Way Love (Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers)
Yes, this is where IG indulged in pure out and out Hero Worship, no less!!
He told the story about going round CB's house.
He was given some old gear which he took home on the bus.
IG liked CB because he "sang out".
And of course, CB turned up at IG's Gillan's Inn recording sessions.
CB got out of his Range Rover.
He asked what do you want me to do?
He didn't have to do anything else!!
[But I think he did....]
Love In An Elevator (Aerosmith)
He has been stuck in an elevator twice.
And no, he hasn't [yet!]
The 80's rock producers took a more pop approach, which was easy on the ear.
The purists resented it.
Aerosmith are a show band who have succesfully reinvented themselves.
I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (Dusty Springfield)
Episode 6 were the opening act on DustyS's tour in 1966.
The compere gave them advice on what to do so they did not appear like wallpaper.
DustyS was consistently brilliant, and very good humoured.
She sits alongside Cliff Bennett and young Elvis as one of his big heroes.
Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin)
"What can you say?"
He described the post-Beatles/Stones time and the strength of British pop.
LZ were terrific players.
The whole band wer putting their own personalities into the music.
They were let loose rather than being produced.
The lyrics were not allowed on "proper radio".
"Wonderful stuff!"
Fire (The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown)
In Episode 6 IG used to share the lead vocals with Shelia. They had similar ranges.
Therefore, he learnt the falsetto and controlled screaming.
Apparently we can blame Arthur Brown!
Monday Monday (Mamas And Papas)
They were another group from the West Coast.
He liked Mama Cass and the complexity of the harmonies they did.
He was amazed at how professional the US bands were, and how much practice they put in.
Considering this lot were selected to be radio-friendly for a weekday mid-morning RAdio 2 audience, I felt they did actually form a good representation of the "Tracks of his Years".
I wish we could get hold of the real uncensored ones though !!

Re: ian on radio 2 tracks of my years
I thought "Fire" was there because of Frank Zappa. When the casino in Montreux caught on fire, Frank shouted: "Fire! Arthur Brown, in person!"

In 2003 my son and I were invited by IG's management to come backstage during a festival in Holland. We met IG and RG they were very friendly. We had a talk with them, took some pictures and they signed some stuff.
During the Bananas tour we were invited at a concert in Germany. We met RG while he was looking at Molly Hatchet and he was willing to pose for a few pictures.
After the show RG was the first to show up and we had a great time.
Even talked about TMIB and RG talked very positive about him.
When IG showed up my son wanted him to sign the Bananas cd,he took the cd and went to the dressing rooms to let IP, DA and SM sign it also.
I can only say they looked like real down to earth guys.
