arena type show
just watched the stones bridges to babylon dvd wow what a show!the thought occurs to me that its a shame that the purps never really did the huge arena type performance ie with the huge stage and backing aka the stones and floyd etc as the purps music would really lend itself to this type of setting i know some will say that purple didnt need all the fancy effects and backing musicians and ok maybe they didnt but im sure that blackers would have loved the chance to do all the struttin along the long gangways etc thoughts anyone?

Re: arena type show
I think with DP, thier overall performances suffered when they played the big gigs while RB and JL were still in the band. Blackmore is an inspirationally induced player and when he knows that most of the crowd is there just to party and because they heard SOTW on the radio, he is not inspired to play very well and the sound always suffers at these big gigs. DP and Rainbow were always better in the smaller venues as witnessed by MIJ and all of the boots of RBR and DP. When Rainbow played places like MSG, it was always just an excuse for Blackmore to just put on his theatrical side for those in the nosebleed section to see and his playing would not be up to RB standards.

Re: arena type show
All I know is that mk II played alot of arena and some stadium gigs 71-73, among them Randwick stadium in 71.
And of course mk II did it in 84-88 too.

Re: arena type show
the point I was trying to make was the fact that yes DP did play in large arenas but never had the same huge stage settings ie light show and backing musicians etc as the stones and pink floyd obviously this kind of show was not done in the 70s but was certainly being done by the reunion years and it would have been great if the purps had taken advantage of this technology as i reckon it could have done a lot more toward keeping the legend alive than the shows the guys did do

Re: arena type show
Well, Deep Purple always kept strictly to the music itself. They've done albums and gigs! Other stuff like singles, videos and any form of stage show never was their style.
In a way I like this, an dI like Purple proving that the music itself can be enough. But on the other side I'm willing to use the same argument against Purple.
They'd sold at least twice as many albums, and in general had been rated much higher by the music press if they'd not been so stubborn about their 'pure' ideology.
But ok, why would Purple need more fans, or want to sell even more record? Why being remembered as a great and important band by anyone but hardcore fans? I honestly don't know. I just think that they could, given how good their music are.

Re: arena type show
True that DP always kept it to the music itself but one thing that caught my attention was that they reduced any light'n laser show to the minimum, as soon as RB was out of the band.
Could be coincidence but I sometimes wondered if he had a word in the show.

Re: arena type show
Could it be to keep the costs down? I am sure net profit is very important when touring is your bread and butter..

Could be. Both Ritchie and RJ Dio had always thought that you should give the fans a bit of theatrics to go along with the music. Hence the Electronic Rainbow (very cool) along with Cozys light show within a light show drum solo and then those ridiculous Eyes. But they all had something to do with an lp title. I can't imagine what backdrop you could do for Perfect Strangers. A pair of identical twins meeting up and shaking hands for the first time? Who would realize it?
House of Blue Light? Just keep the blue spotlights on all the time?
Although Slaves and Masters might have made for some interesting stage antics. Xtremely scantily dressed supermodels being chased by whip slingin tyrants.
mmmmmmm suuuuuperrrrmodellls
The stage theatrics for Purpendicular have stayed with the band through to this day. Everyone standing perpendicular to the floor.

Re: arena type show
Arena shows are, in my experience, always weaker than concert hall shows.
